    “Grandpopsicle” Morstoel haunts the Rockies

    Driving into Nederland, CO on Saturday, lines of cars were parked along the highway for a mile leading into town. If you didn’t know already, the 17th annual Frozen Dead Guy Days festival was taking place, and there were throngs of people for as far as you could see from Hwy 119 all the way down to Guercio Park by Barker Reservoir, and on every other highway leading into town from Boulder and Estes Park. Finally locating a parking spot, I parked the Jeep and strolled down East 1st Street, taking in all the sights and sounds. Even with the falling snow and chilly temps, there were poets espousing prose from makeshift stages, frozen turkey bowling in the street, beer tents and live music along both sides, and interesting people of all ages and walks of life to talk to.     Teams come home with four wins

    Gilpin County Middle and High Schools took three teams to the 28th Colorado Science Bowl recently, coming home with four victories. The high school event took place on March 3 at Dakota Ridge High School in Littleton, with 41 teams competing. The middle school competition was held on February 3 at Mountain View High School, with 24 teams participating. It was only the second time that Gilpin had sent teams to the Bowl; last year was the inaugural effort. (more…)

    The Gilpin County Community Center gym was jam packed last Saturday night, March 3, as more than 300 hungry guests lined up for bowls of mouth-watering chili and all the trimmings. It was time once again for the High Country Auxiliary’s (HCA) huge chili dinner and silent auction to raise money to help fund the Timberline Fire Protection District (TFPD) and Gilpin County Animal Response Team (GCART) volunteers.     The Central City Council met with Staff on February 20, 2018, for a work session prior to the regular council meeting. The topic of conversation was a Gaps Analysis of Emergency Services presented by Dan Qualman of ESCI (Emergency Services Consulting International). The City has long known their firefighting resources are being stretched thin with age and hired an independent third party to conduct an analysis based on 2016 figures. (more…)

    Born January 27, 1822, to Seth and Retsey (Thayer) Gambell, in Richard County, Ohio, Alfred D. Gambell grew to manhood on his parent’s farm and attended the local school.

    In 1844, when he was twenty-two years old, he made his way to the shores of Lake Erie and secured a job on a steamer, later temporarily locating in Buffalo, New York. He traveled extensively in the Midwest and New England before securing a position in 1847 on a whaler bound for the Arctic regions. One year later, he returned to the United States, soon after securing passage aboard a ship bound for California by way of the Horn. (more…)
