Protector of City Records since 1879
Shortly after the City offices moved into the new City Hall, in December 1877, the need for protected storage for the City’s records became apparent. The City Council apparently did some homework, and in the minutes of August 4, 1879, record is made that: “On motion of Alderman Wain, the Council purchased of Mosler Bahmann & Co. a No. 35 fire proof safe, size inside 48 inches high, 26 inches wide, 16 inches deep. Terms in Cincinnati Ohio, city warrants, for four hundred and fifty dollars, less freight to Black Hawk Colorado, due in 15 months from date of shipment, without interest.” (more…)

The vintage church bell was rung by Saratoga Casino Director of Security and Surveillance, John Helmerich, promptly at 3:00 p.m. to signify the start of another Black Hawk City Council meeting on September 12, 2018. Recently, one of our local residents was asking about the large holes she found all over her property, and how they came to be.
Stephen Buck, previous resident, historian and founder/ moderator of the “You know you’re from Gilpin County” group on Facebook, replied that these were often called “Henry Holes” after Henry Niccum, an old prospector from Gilpin County who used to wander around the county tossing sticks of dynamite here and there to blow test holes! Board of Equalization meets regarding property valuation protests

The Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Thursday, August 2, at 9:00 a.m. at the Gilpin County Courthouse. Those present were Chair Ron Engels, Commissioners Linda Isenhart and Gail Watson, County Attorney Jim Petrock, and Deputy Clerk to the Board Sharon Cate. The only amendment to the agenda was the addition of a resolution, #18-11, supporting grant applications for the rehabilitation of the Belvidere Theatre by the City of Central. (more…)

Colorado at the Columbian Exposition of 1893

World War I lasted over four years, involved 32 countries, and killed nearly 9 million soldiers, with 10 million civilian casualties. The horrific conflict came to an end one hundred years ago this year, on November 11, 1918. Jenny Creek Trail provides an easy off-road outing

Talking to some local friends recently, we decided to take advantage of the beautiful Colorado weather and cool mountain temps by doing a day trip on a local Jeep trail. We discussed several local options that were more scenic than difficult, and decided on one of our favorites – the Jenny Creek Trail that parallels the Rollins Pass Road about halfway up to the Needles Eye Tunnel after turning off from Tolland Road out west of Rollinsville.
