    Recently, one of our local residents was asking about the large holes she found all over her property, and how they came to be.

    Stephen Buck, previous resident, historian and founder/ moderator of the “You know you’re from Gilpin County” group on Facebook, replied that these were often called “Henry Holes” after Henry Niccum, an old prospector from Gilpin County who used to wander around the county tossing sticks of dynamite here and there to blow test holes!     The Evergreen Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) performed an 1860’s style flag presentation at Washington Hall in Central City on Wednesday, August 1.

    On that date in 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation admitting Colorado as the 38th state. Accordingly, August 1, 2018, marked Colorado’s 142nd birthday. (more…)

    Bill Lorenz passed away Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2018 and will be missed by everyone who knew him. Family members are wife Kay, children Heidi (Ed) Pasic, Lisa Artz, Tony (Mary) Lorenz, Stephanie (Al) Elio, and Jeff (Suzi) Lorenz. Also are sixteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A memorial service is tentatively planned for August 16th, but is not yet confirmed.     World War I lasted over four years, involved 32 countries, and killed nearly 9 million soldiers, with 10 million civilian casualties. The horrific conflict came to an end one hundred years ago this year, on November 11, 1918.     The Timberline Fire Protection District “Parade One” fire truck made its first public appearance in the Nederland 4th of July Parade. The 1924 Chevrolet Obenchain-Boyer Chemical Engine was a gift to the district to “honor the men and woman of Gilpin and Boulder Counties and their supporting families who serve the community as volunteer fire fighters past, present, and future.” (more…)

Travis Wright and Kate Wright on Tuesday, July 31st at 7 pm at the Gilpin County Public Library. The event will include rarely-seen photographs from the newly-announced John Trezise Archive for Rollins Pass Imagery and the authors will discuss the significance of archaeological work being done on Rollins Pass to help document 10,000 years of history.
