John W. Ratliff was an early settler of Gilpin County, who arrived in Nevadaville in 1860. He had a long and varied career, in which he helped Nevadaville through its developmental years and saw it through its heyday. Mr. Ratliff’s most notable accomplishments were postmaster and justice of the peace. As justice of the peace, Mr. Ratliff duties would include: settling disputes in miner’s court, officiating weddings, and swearing-in (more…)
Getting down with some New Orleans Funk!
Presented by Big Easy and Central Presents, Central Jazz is the revival of the Central City Jazz Festival, which ran continuously from 1976 through 1992. Expanding to two days in 2019, the festival had four stages and numerous bands over June 7th and 8th. Once again, we’re pleased to have jazz legends of New Orleans and Mardis Gras-style attractions presented in the historical streets of Central City. (more…)

Clear Creek County Memorial Day week end held two races. The first was 5-6 miles that includes a 12% grade over rough areas, and the 2nd was 10.5 miles passing old mines, including the Arco. Burro races continue into September through mountain areas of Colorado where it is officially a summer heritage sport. (more…)
Made possible the settling of America

May 6, 1859 a rich vein of gold was found in Gregory’s Gulch, known as Gregory’s Lode, just uphill from the North Fork of Clear Creek, in what was then the Kansas Territory. Two weeks after the discovery, Pike’s Peak Gold Rush was on, some say in two months 10,000 people joined the search for gold in what became Gilpin County. (more…)

Architect RS Roeschlaub designed the Central City Opera House

The Central City Opera House Association and the Opera Guild hosted an afternoon tea on the 2nd floor of the Teller House on Sunday, May 19th at noon, to honor Robert S. Roeschlaub, Colorado architect who designed the Central City Opera House. The tea was set for dates to correspond to visits of Roeschlaub’s decedents. Celebrating and remembering our local heritage

On Monday, May 6, at 7 p.m. at the Ameristar Casino on the 10th floor, there were five large tables set for eight people each. A cash bar was set in an adjourning room where guests arrived and mingled, to celebrate the 50th year the Gilpin Historical Society, (GHS). Mayors of Central City and Black Hawk enjoyed the evening with others. (more…)
