On Tuesday, May 29, 2018, Central City Council held a special meeting to address several issues. Several Council members and staff have planned absences during the summer lessening the number of meetings to one per month, so this push felt necessary and responsible to address needs timely. (more…)

Passing on local history to the next generation

Susan Sepanik teaches math and science, and Beth Olkowsky teaches language arts and history. Both teachers are among the finest teachers, building strong relationships with each individual 4th grader while having half the 4th graders in their homeroom class. My dad, Edward R. Lewandowski, passed away on March 14, 2018. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Army Air Corps as a flight engineer on C-47s, B-17s, and B-29s.
Dad was the founder of the Broken Handle Mining Corporation in 1955 and was the President ever since. He began mining in high-altitude mines (El. 12,000 ft) in (more…)
March 16, 1932 – February 13, 2018
Dr. Jerald “Jerry” A. Griess, 85, died Tuesday, February 13, 2018 in Murfreesboro, TN from complications related to his blood pressure and Parkinson’s Disease. In hospice care for four days, Jerry passed on peacefully in his sleep.
Jerry was preceded in death by his first wife Roberta Griess and his parents Alfred and Frieda (Engelhardt) Griess. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Rosalie (more…)

Nederland’s Own Hometown Band at Red Rocks Amphitheater

Seniors honored at scholarship ceremony

The members of Gilpin High School’s graduating Class of 2018 will be starting their futures with an estimated $456,158 in scholarship money. The funds come from local contributors and from colleges that the young men and women will be attending. (more…)
Gilpin kids observe Safety Day with area first responders

“I’ve always wanted to be a paramedic,” declared Lydia, a kindergartner at Gilpin Elementary School.
Lydia and her classmates were soon to get the chance to see just what paramedics and other first responders do. It was Safety Day for students in preschool through fifth grade on Tuesday, May 22, and the children congregated at the Gilpin County ball fields on Highway 46 for a fun day of learning. (more…)

Gilpin Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony Saturday, May 19

On Saturday morning, May 19th at 11:00 am, the American Legion Post 166 and VFW Post 7563 will hold the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Gilpin Veteran’s Memorial, at the Gilpin Community Center, and a dedication of the newly inscribed Veteran’s bricks that are set at the Memorial. 71st Season Grand Opening
The Gilpin County Art Gallery will officially open its Juried Show, Saturday, June 2nd, at 10 am, for its 71st year of continued service. Manager Michele Roussel, Board Members and volunteers have prepared the iconic 1864 Washington Hall Building located at 117 Eureka Street in Central City. Artists from all around Colorado have brought wonderful, unusual and beautiful art of various media. A special fun evening of awards, entertainment, refreshments and fellowship will begin at 5 pm until 8 pm. (more…)
