Black Hawk City Manager Jack Lewis retires
Police Chief Cole is Acting City ManagerPRESS RELEASE – The City of Black Hawk announces the retirement of Jack Lewis, effective Friday, November 2nd. Mr. Lewis served as city manager for seven years and helped Black Hawk in advancing its goal in becoming a top resort destination.
“The City Council would like to thank Jack for his seven years of service to the City of Black Hawk,” said Mayor David Spellman. “He was dedicated to the City in his role of City Manager.” (more…)

Things have changed somewhat since Gilpin’s theatre group for young people held its first “Taste of Broadway” performance in September 2017. At that time, the group was the Gilpin Elementary Theatre Department, and the goal of the “Taste of Broadway” show was to raise funds for the elementary school’s budding performing arts program. “Peak to Peak Players” brings a cabaret show to Gilpin by Patty Unruh
There’s always magic in the air on Broadway. There was quite a bit of it in the air in Gilpin County, too, on Saturday, October 20, as the Peak to Peak Players strutted their stuff to an appreciative audience at the Gilpin School auditorium. Children, adults, and teens entertained like pros with songs, dances, and comedy from several musicals. (more…)

The life and times of Tom Varner
The early days in Gilpin CountyBy Jaclyn Schrock
With retirement, the Varner’s made their move to Colorado, September 18, 1993. Tita enjoyed the area in the 30s and Tom in the 40s. Tom and Tita Varner settled into Gilpin County while in their 60s. They became the third owners of a home near the corner of Hwy 46 and Hwy 119. 1980 is when their log home was first built and lived in only two years, then sat empty for four years. The next owner had it six years then developed health problems. Moving into Gilpin County in 1993, they knew there was much work to do on the property. (more…)

At least 100 Gilpin County voters turned out at the Gilpin Community Center last Saturday morning, October 13, for an election forum. The audience heard the qualifications and positions of 11 candidates for the following Gilpin County offices: Board of County Commissioners, Sheriff, Assessor, Clerk and Recorder, and Treasurer. The temperature drops, and clouds threaten as darkness descends upon the cobbled streets of Central City. When this happens in the weeks preceding All Hallows Eve, the spirits of long-dead citizens come back to tell their tales in the old, oft-times decrepit buildings they inhabit and 2018 is no exception. For the past ten years, the Central City Creepy Crawl has been held to entertain participants with true stories of the past, albeit embellished somewhat for theater. (more…)

The beat goes on with Gilpin school musicians

Variety was key at the Gilpin County Middle and High School fall concert on Thursday, October 11. Band and choir members were directed by music teacher Randi Ebers. Audience members gathered in the school auditorium for an evening of musical entertainment featuring strings, woodwinds, brass, vocals, a rain stick, and even a broomstick. (more…)
