Traditional topping off ceremony in Black Hawk
PRESS RELEASE – Monarch Casino Resort Spa celebrated a major construction milestone on Thursday, November 29: reaching its final height of 23 stories. To celebrate this historic achievement, Monarch Casino Resort Spa joined with the City of Black Hawk and PCL Construction to host a traditional topping off ceremony featuring a beam signing by all crew members. Attached to the beam, an evergreen tree covered in holiday lights was raised to the top of the building and visible to Black Hawk visitors as they enter the city on Highway 119. (more…)

Lighting ceremony kicks off the holiday season

Black Hawk’s Mayor David Spellman and City officials hosted the annual lighting ceremony to kick off the holidays at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, at the gazebo at Stroehle Square at the corner of Gregory and Main Streets. The evening was crisply cool but pleasant, darkness was just setting in, and crowds were gathering to munch snowman cookies and warm up with mugs of cocoa or cider. Visitors donned free Santa hats as they anticipated the countdown to the lighting of one of Colorado’s largest displays. (more…)
Gilpin preschoolers host the Feast of Stone Soup

Tiny tots – eyes all aglow, of course! – learned the value of sharing and being thankful as they served at Gilpin County School’s traditional preschool Thanksgiving stone soup feast. Audiences delighted by Peak to Peak Players’ performances of Little Mermaid Jr.

Life is the bubbles under the sea. But if you happen to be a teen mermaid, and you try to check out life in the human realm, the waters can get choppy. Of course, that oceanic conflict made for a great story in “Little Mermaid Jr.,” presented last Friday, November 16, and Saturday, November 17, by Peak to Peak Players in the Gilpin County School auditorium. At Christ the King Community Church

The more than 40 folks of all ages who came to HawkQuest Saturday, November 17 at Christ the King Community Church, came away with a deeper understanding of the birds of prey in Colorado. The HawkQuest presentation helped us realize the things we can do to preserve the amazingly well equipped birds’ habitat which included being respectful of the environment we share, along with simply picking up trash. We were reminded that in creation, God asked the people to take care of the animals. (more…)
Gilpin County School hosts traditional Thanksgiving meal

Gilpin County’s senior citizens were treated to extra-special service on Thursday, November 15, as they gathered at Gilpin County School for a hearty Thanksgiving meal. A smiling, grateful crowd of about 60 participants in the Gilpin Community Center’s senior program came for the well-loved tradition. Fifth graders from the traditional and Montessori classes held the doors open for their guests, escorted them down the hall to the old gym, served the meal, and cleaned up afterwards. Lively musical entertainment was provided by the school’s band and choir. (more…)
