From army cutworms to flying up the mountains in Colorado

The first army cutworms I saw this year were falling from masses of caterpillar web nests high in the cottonwood trees along the San Pedro River in Arizona, mid-April, very normal. There were tons of caterpillars everywhere. About 2 inches long, light grey with a brilliant blue strip front to back on both sides. (more…)

June 27, 1969 – March 18, 2020
It is with unimaginable sadness that the family of David Rush Hitchcock announces his passing on Wednesday, March 18th, 2020 in San Clemente, Ecuador. Born in Atlanta, GA on June 27, 1969, raised (mostly) in Louisville, David became a man of the world. David graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1992, with Lexington being the breeding ground for lifelong friendships and the love of bourbon (which by law is only truly made in KY). (more…)
November 21, 1956 – February 18, 2020
Mindy Wales was born in New York City and grew up in Queens, New York. At the age of 19 she moved to Colorado and became a long-time resident of Gilpin County. She owned and operated an old time photo studio called “Mr. Yellow Bellows” in Central City forabout 10 years. She was a loving mother of two sons, Cody and Wyatt. During the last five years of her life, Mindy had a long fight with Metastatic Lung Cancer. The memorial service will be held on Sunday March 1st, at 2 pm at The Caribou Room, (more…)

Steven Vidyaran Hanson, 68, a longtime resident of Pinecliffe, Colorado, died on February 16, 2020 of cancer. Born in Oakland, California on March 8, 1951 to Robert Carl Hanson and Margaret Bremner, Steve attended Flatirons Elementary School, Baseline Junior High, and Boulder High School. Steve worked as a chef on the Big Island of Hawaii in the early 1970s, then at the Broker Inn in Boulder. He made the most exquisite hollandaise sauce, and once earned a standing ovation from the brunch guests at a mountain eatery who had watched him prepare (more…)

Longtime Gilpin County resident, Donald Albert Bennallack, M.D., passed away early in the morning of February 7, 2020 after a short hospitalization at 95 years old. He was born October 9, 1924, the son of Ralph Bennallack and Leona J. (Weir) Bennallack, of Central City, CO. Born and raised in Denver, “Dr. B,” as his many beloved friends and patients called him, graduated from East High School in Denver in 1942 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Named one of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places 2020

On Thursday, January 31st, Colorado Preservation, Inc. announced the selection of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places for 2020. The East Portal Camp cabins in Gilpin County west of Rollinsville on Tolland Road were selected as one of four winners to receive this important designation. April 15, 1955 – December 25, 2019
Harvey Merle McCollum passed away on Christmas Day 2019, in Hotchkiss, CO. He was born in Rollinsville, CO, to parents Donald and Roberta McCollum. He spent his childhood roaming the mountains and foothills of the Front Range while attending the small elementary school in Rollinsville.

Gilpin County Commissioners listen to resident’s concerns

Gilpin County Commissioner’s (BoCC) regular meeting was delayed slightly Tuesday, December 10, 2019. The extra five minutes allowed time for comments from the press and public, so three people commented. The first was a question about the delay of a response, and the next two were concerned citizens regarding the noise of jet traffic in our community. (more…)

The Extension Office in Gilpin County opened in 2001. County Commissioner Craig Nicholson envisioned the benefits of Gilpin County having its own Extension office, as most US counties either have their own office or share with neighboring counties. It took much preparation, encouragement and cooperation with county agencies to bring the office into being. With funding from the State of Colorado and Gilpin County, our CSU Extension Office has given us 17 years of environmental education for decision making leaders and homeowners. (more…)
