Alonzo Nelson Allen was born in 1820 to John and Anna (Greenleaf) Allen on a farm near Seneca, New York. A quiet man, hard of hearing, he rarely discussed his early years. In his twenties, he relocated to Ohio and later to Columbus, Wisconsin where he farmed and operated a mill. (more…)
Joint meeting with County seals the deal

National concerns regarding police brutality and lethal force will not be coming to Central City anytime soon. As of January 1, 2017, Central City will no longer have a police force protecting its fine citizens; instead, dedicated county deputies will be patrolling the area and keeping us safe. (more…)

The Gilpin H.S. Eagles football squad was close to pulling off a win against the Soroco Rams last Saturday, October 8. But as they say, “close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” Dreams of victory blew up in a disappointing 20-14 overtime loss, but the Eagles made their stronger competitors work for every point. About 80 people turned out at the Gilpin Community Center last Saturday afternoon, October 1, for an election forum. The audience heard the qualifications and positions of the six candidates for the Board of County Commissioners. Top issues included transportation, medical services, whether or not to diversify apart from the gaming industry, and accessibility to county facilities and to the commissioners themselves. (more…)
Lady Eagles’ volleyball clips two Eagle opponents

Off-roading on local trails to enjoy the fall weather and colors

Comes to Central City in a Big Way!

Vintage 1950’s hot rods were spotted on Thursday, September 15th converging on Central City and Black Hawk from all over the state and beyond, causing the community to wonder what was going on. It was soon apparent by Friday noon when over 150 vintage cars roared up to the KOA for tech inspection after the morning reliability run from Golden to Central City to kick off the Hot Rod Hill Climb. Gilpin High School shut out the Caliche Buffaloes 46-14 in a home non-league football battle last Saturday, September 17. It’s the first win this season for Gilpin, whose record is 1-2. The Buffs are 0-4. (more…)
