Lasagna Dinner, Talent Show, and Auction Fundraiser

Gilpin County has an abundance of sunny and rip-roaring seniors. The Gilpin County Senior Living organization (GCSL), hosted their 3rd annual fundraiser Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the high school. A hearty and delicious lasagna dinner was created by this group for the sole purpose of raising funds to build affordable, senior-friendly rental housing for Gilpin County Seniors. (more…)
Not your grandpa’s big burly man profile anymore

In the not so distant past, burly men with their equally burly buddies set out to their favorite hunting grounds to pursue whatever species of quarry they had a license for. They would leave their families back home to engage in the most ancient of rituals. Hunting! They would sleep in tents, eat out of their mess kits, relieve themselves in the woods, play poker after the sun went down, and for the most part revisit their ingrained caveman tendencies. (more…)

HawkQuest brings its Classroom-in-the-Wild to Gilpin County

Many of us have seen a hawk perched in the top of a tall pine, or we’ve been startled by an owl that has swooped in front of our windshield. Perhaps we’ve been fortunate enough to spot an eagle as it soared in wide circles high in the sky. Seldom do we have the privilege of seeing one of these raptors for more than a brief glimpse. Volleyball vs. Rangely
Deer Trail was little competition for Gilpin’s varsity volleyball team last week, as the Lady Eagles soared over their opponents 3-0 in a home non-conference match on October 18. Gilpin also visited the Dawson School Mustangs of Lafayette on October 20 in a final season game, losing 0-3 in that skirmish. The Lady Eagles end their regular season 11-8, 5-6 in league action. Forest Service Open Houses Scheduled

Central City’s Great Pumpkin Patch

Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin Patch entered Central City’s “Big-T” parking lot with the big winds. Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, volunteers from the Central City Fire Department Foundation and Main Street Central City met the October winds with gusto. Customers galore, wrapped in winter gear, filled ‘little red’ wagons with pumpkins of various sizes. The little ones quickly chose the littlest pumpkins. (more…)

Football Win v. Hayden
Gilpin Eagle fans held on through a bitingly cold, blustery October 14th afternoon to cheer their team to a 38-0 conference win over the Hayden Tigers in the final home game of the season. The victory brings the Eagles to a 6-1 record, 3-0 in league action. The Hayden Tigers now hold a 4-3 record. (more…)
Taking Shape to be User-Friendly

The Gregory Street thoroughfare has been in the state of flux for 158 years. It is a primary artery joining two incredible and historic cities, Black Hawk and Central City. According to Black Hawk’s Mayor David Spellman, the Gregory Street “HARD” District is right on schedule. HARD was coined by Spellman and the Black Hawk City Council. It stands for “History Appreciation Recreation Destination.” The future distilleries moving to the city like the phrase because HARD refers to their industry. The Mayor likes it because it ties in with the vision he has embraced for several years – that Black Hawk become a friendlier, year-round resort destination. (more…)

Volleyball fans dig Lady Eagle wins against Kiowa, Heritage Christian

Gridiron Action
The Gilpin High School varsity football team pushed past the Soroco Rams of Oak Creek 48-40 on October 6 in a conference game on the Rams’ field. The Gilpin Eagles are having a good season, with a 5-1 overall record to date. The Eagles are second in the Northwest 8-man football league behind undefeated West Grand, whom they will visit on October 27. Soroco is now third, with a 4-2 record. (more…)
Visitors’ Center Showcase Gallery Hosts New Art Exhibit
It doesn’t take much awareness to note the changing seasons in Gilpin County. Leaf peepers abound to enjoy the fall colors and residents have already needed to use snow removal equipment.
On the second floor of the Central City Visitors’ Center, “A Change of Seasons” is also noted. This new exhibit features painter John Cieraszynski; photographer Gale Gatto; and silversmith Tom Cowherd. (more…)
