Lean times for Broncos fans

It has been 27 years (1990) since the Denver Broncos have lost six straight games. Home Alone and Edward Scissorhands were popular at the box office and the show Twin Peaks premiered on television. Milli Vanilli was caught lip synching, and Lech Walesa was elected president of Poland. East and West Germany were unified, and Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, triggering Operation Desert Storm. Recent data shows that, marriages last an average eight years¹, home ownership last an average twelve years², and car ownership lasts a record average of six years, two months³. Owning a vehicle for sixty-four years is unheard of unless you’re 84 year old Hubert Hill of Golden.
Hill owns a 1953 GMC 3100 half ton that he purchased new in March of 1953. It is a split windshield, Juniper Green with cream trim with the standard gray interior. All the gauges and controls are original with the odometer reading 147,000 miles. (more…)
Mountain Rendezvous Chapter gives back to our community

Our Gilpin County first responders do a great deal to keep this community safe and running smoothly. Many of them are volunteers and are our friends and neighbors.
With this in mind, the Mountain Rendezvous Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Evergreen took time last year — October 2016 — to reach out with goodie baskets and thank-you notes for members of the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office and Timberline Fire Protection District. The baskets included chips and salsa, hummus, popcorn, trail mix, cookies, home-baked banana bread, and protein drinks. The treats were the group’s way to show appreciation for the many services our first responders provide. (more…)
Austin Boulter voted 2A Mile High League player of the year

The Gilpin County High School football players were honored at a banquet and awards program at the Elks Lodge in Central City last Thursday, November 16.
Head Coach Craig Ball summarized the team’s achievements this season. The Eagles finished with a 7-3 win-loss record. They won seven games in a row and were victorious in their homecoming game. They also beat two playoff teams, both on the road, and triumphed over a Top Four team. Gilpin was fourth in the league in total yards with 4,054, third in tackles with 739, and seventh in interceptions. They were proud to be invited to the state playoffs for the first time in many years. (more…)
Gilpin County School pays tribute to our community’s veterans

Gilpin County military veterans were honored with a tribute on Thursday morning, November 9, at Gilpin County School. Community members, students, administration, and active duty military personnel gathered to express thanks to these selfless individuals who sacrificed that we might live in a free country. (more…)
Christian Outdoor Fellowship of America

As the sun rose on the 2017 edition of Veteran’s Day, volunteers and youngsters gathered for the annual COFA Turkey Shoot. The event was held for the second year at the Colorado Adventure Center located near 6th Ave and Kipling and was sponsored by Christian Outdoor Fellowship of America (COFA). (more…)

Taylor retires as long-time member of the Gilpin Board of Education

Charlotte Taylor has helped steer the ship of the Gilpin County RE-1 school district for the past eight years as a vital member of the school board. Taylor’s term of service was completed with the November 7 board meeting, during which her fellow members and the assembled public celebrated her many contributions. School board president Craig Holmes presented Taylor with a framed resolution proclaiming November as “Charlotte Taylor Recognition Month.” (more…)

With Gregory Street open in Black Hawk, the area was not quiet where more construction is about to begin, as other projects are still being wrapped up. Mayor and Alderman David Spellman requested the meeting begin. New Fire Fighters; Matt Bowman and Cody Kalb were at the bell ringing post. Three rings with controls on the ropes made the signal to call the City of Black Hawk City Council Meeting to Order at 3:00 pm Wednesday, November 8, 2017. (more…)

Isle of Capri Casino supports No Soldier Left Behind

This week we honor our Veterans – men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country. Many of these soldiers come back to their homes wounded in mind and spirit. PTSD, (Post-traumatic stress disorder), TBI (Traumatic brain injury), Sleep Disorders, Anxiety and Depression are just a few results of war. The VA and insurance companies offer standard medical treatment and “talk therapies.” “Talk therapies do not usually work with soldiers suffering PTSD because they have to re-live the experiences all over again. Soldiers are reluctant to talk about the horrors that have lived through,” says Blair. “The current systems are failing them.” (more…)
Northern Front Range Recreational Sport Shooting Management Partnership Project

On November 6, the Gilpin County Community Center was the site of an event that may shape the future sport shooting on federally owned property in Gilpin County. The Northern Front Range Recreational Sport Shooting Management Partnership (RSSMP) hosted the event that was attended by about 60 Gilpin Citizens, County Commissioners, and members of the Sheriff’s Department. All in attendance are concerned with the increased shooting activity on nearby Forest Service System property. (more…)

Volleyball and football teams note improvements

Students in sixth through eighth grade at Gilpin County Middle School celebrated the end of volleyball and football seasons with a banquet and awards program on Wednesday, November 1. Volleyball team takes a loss in playoff match

Eagles v. West Grand
The Gilpin County H.S. Eagles football team was denied a win against the West Grand Mustangs (Kremmling) in the last regular season battle on Friday, October 27. The Eagles were unable to even get on the board in the away league game, losing 52-0. It was Gilpin’s only league loss this season; the Eagles’ record fell to 7-2 overall, while West Grand is still undefeated with a 9-0 record. (more…)
