Public Forum for Residents and Board Meeting

Timberline FPD hosted a public forum for residents on May 15. Chief Paul Ondr explained the need for this upcoming inclusion election. Currently, Timberline covers approximately 125 square miles in both Gilpin and Boulder County. The inclusion model would extend its boundaries to 173 square miles, though there’s nothing “square” about its shape, which covers south of Nederland to the north of Idaho Springs. (more…)

The Peak to Peak Chorale Performs Woody Guthrie

Local talent in rural Gilpin County can be beautiful as our sunsets or sometimes like a diamond in the rough. This last weekend, May 5 through May 7, the Peak to Peak Chorale proved to be a fantastic sunset. The Chorale’s annual spring musical this year is called “Woody Guthrie Hard Travelin’: Life in America” and used Guthrie’s music and quotes to paint a picture of life in 1930s and 40s western America. If you took a second, I am pretty sure you could think of someone who was saved with CPR. I think of my dad. Our family had a cabin in Aspen Springs for four years when he had a heart attack while talking to his boss on the phone, preparing for a transfer. We live in a great age of movies. An age when theaters have ten to twenty auditoriums to show as many individual movies as possible and accommodate the demand that blockbusters bring, enabling production companies to churn out as many ideas as they can. Football or fluff?

Lingerie Football caught my eye in 2004 when it was offered as a Super Bowl halftime entertainment alternative. Taken as seriously as the Puppy Bowl, it nonetheless grabbed male viewers’ attention. Combining two of men’s favorite interests of scantily clad women playing football sporting lacey bras, panties, and garter belts seemed to be a can’t miss concept, and Lingerie Bowls II and III were aired the following years. Never without its critics citing blatant objectification, the third Lingerie Bowl was the last of the series. (more…)

To the Pike’s Peak Country in 1859 on the Smoky Hill Route – Part I
Henry Villard was a young newspaper correspondent who joined the Pike’s Peak gold rush early in 1859. The article presented here was his first story to his newspaper, the Cincinnati Daily Commercial, and appeared June 3, 1859. It was dated “Denver City, Mouth of Cherry Creek, May 17, 1859.” (more…)
