The pandemic may bring many negative thoughts to mind, but for some, it has been a boon. Such is the case for the Gilpin County Arts Association and their enchanting exhibit space in historic Washington Hall of Central City. Most fifth graders know that about 71 percent of the Earth is covered by water and up to 60 percent of the human body also is water. What many people don’t realize if that only about 2.5 percent of the planet’s water is freshwater, suitable for drinking. The rest is ocean-based, mostly saltwater. (more…)

Death Claims Aged Resident
Pioneer Globeville Public Official Passes at Age of 91. Nels C. Johnson, 91, of Floyd Hill, Colo., early-day public official in Globeville before it became part of Denver and former postmaster at Floyd Hill, died at his home Thursday after a short illness. He was a resident of Colorado fifty-three years, justice of the peace, and town treasurer of Globeville in the early days of its incorporation, and postmaster at Floyd Hill twenty-eight years. He retired a year and a half ago. Born in Denmark in 1847, he came to Chicago in 1871 at the age of 24, accompanied by his wife, Kirsten. After a few months in (more…)

Gilpin School Interact Club

Interact is what Gilpin kids call the Gilpin County School Interact club, a Rotary sponsored youth organization. The Interact Club has been a part of the Gilpin School community since 2003. The club focuses on service projects and fundraising for charity. This year has been a little more challenging to come up with projects due to the pandemic and concerns over social distancing.
