The Gilpin County Board of Education held its regular meeting on February 5 at 7 p.m.Craig Holmes, Sarah Swanson, and Kersten Armstrong were present at the start of the meeting. Brook Ramsey and Steve Boulter arrived following basketball games they were involved with. Superintendent David MacKenzie and Secretary to the Board Joni Schmidt were also present. (more…)

Covering Gilpin and Jefferson Counties
PRESS RELEASE – Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Jensen announced on Saturday, February 2nd, that he is a candidate for District Attorney in the First Judicial District, which covers Jefferson and Gilpin Counties. Gilpin boys’ varsity boasts 4-2 record in league battles

Gilpin County H.S. boys’ and girls’ basketball teams hosted the Timberwolves of Union Colony Prep of Greeley (Union) on January 18 and the Warriors of Longmont Christian High School (Longmont) on January 15. The boys emerged victorious in those league contests, vindicating themselves after losses to both of those schools during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. (more…)
Girls perform with Colorado’s finest youth organizations

Two students from Gilpin County Middle School find a creative outlet as they participate in Colorado’s top musical organizations for youth. Dannika Sternlicht sings with the Colorado Children’s Chorale, and Aucklynn Sacco performs on violin with the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra. (more…)
Tournament in Kiowa

This week’s tournament was great for the Gilpin wrestlers. The team walked away with multiple wins in very large brackets. To start off the day, Kamron Brewer won his first match against Dillion Batterton from Lamar High School. He followed that with another win against Colton Dennison from Byers High School. His third and final match was against a wrestler from Kiowa High School, and the combined results set him up get third place at the tourney in his weight class at 113 lbs. – not bad for a first year high school wrestler! Peak to Peak Rotary hosts Iditarod speaker

Since the inception of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1973, hundreds of competitors have come from around the world to make the 1,100-mile run from Anchorage to Nome. Between 60 and 100 teams compete in the event, but the dogs and their mushers can’t do it alone. (more…)

Beverly Willhoft passed away peacefully on January 15, 2019. She lived in Black Hawk with her daughter, Karla Zozulia and son-in-law, Mark Zozulia. Though she lived here only two and a half years, she made a whole group of friends and was very active in community.
She is survived by son Mark Willhoft in Washington, Michigan (wife Jeanette); granddaughter Megan Willhoft in Idaho; (more…)

Gomez, Brewer, and Wenholz take wins

Basketball fundraiser this Sunday at the Dostal Alley

Gilpin High School varsity basketball teams hosted rival school Lyons on Tuesday evening, January 8, in conference battles. The Eagles boys’ varsity sailed past their opponents 52-45, while the Lady Eagles went down 46-13. (more…)
