Saturday’s game vs Merino

Last Saturday’s Gilpin County High School Eagles varsity football game pitted the Eagles against Merino High School of the Plains League. It was a tough day for the Eagles losing the game with no points scored to Merino’s 50. Eagle’s coach Craig Ball said he was pleased with the great effort shown by the Eagles and he was able to play a lot of freshmenand sophomores giving them experience against one of Colorado’s top well coached teams. The Extension Office in Gilpin County opened in 2001. County Commissioner Craig Nicholson envisioned the benefits of Gilpin County having its own Extension office, as most US counties either have their own office or share with neighboring counties. It took much preparation, encouragement and cooperation with county agencies to bring the office into being. With funding from the State of Colorado and Gilpin County, our CSU Extension Office has given us 17 years of environmental education for decision making leaders and homeowners. (more…)

My name is Cherokee Blake, and I’m a candidate for your Gilpin RE-1 School District School Board. I’ve lived in Gilpin County for 24 years and am married to John Blake. We have three daughters, two of whom graduated from Gilpin School. I am the proud grandparent of nine grandchildren, one graduated from Gilpin County School District this past year, and five are currently attending. The Gilpin County Senior Living Board of Directors wishes to thank Carol Snyder for her five years serving on the Board and her valuable work in all aspects of fundraising toward building Gilpin County’s first senior housing. Carol says that she will continue to be a volunteer with Senior Living at our fundraiser and outreach events after resigning the board for personal reasons in August. Carol is a friendly face at our events. She cultivated many community contacts to support our events and kicked-off our fundraising. (more…)

Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church has been part of the life of Central City since the 1860s. The current church building was constructed by Cornish stonemasons in 1874, and it has not changed much. Community Food Shares at the Gilpin Community Center

The Holistic Homestead is a nonprofit that has been helping Gilpin get healthy since 2012. The Homestead does a lot in the community – from workshops like Hands On Health for Kids! to programs like coordinating the Used Durable Medical Equipment lending closets along the Peak to Peak. We surveyed Gilpin residents asking what impacts your health and wellness the most, and folks overwhelmingly responded that lack of access to healthy food was a major barrier to achieving and maintaining health in our community. Proactive Fire Mitigation Volunteers

30 volunteers from Gilpin and Coal Creek showed up on Saturday, August 17 to launch the first Saws and Slaws volunteer fire mitigation project in Gilpin. With support from Saws and Slaws Coal Creek, the group took down almost 70 trees from a property off of La Chula Road. The resulting firewood is being delivered to deserving Gilpin families for winter heating.
