From serious accident to serving his community in three years

Many of you may remember on September 3rd, 2017, Jimi King, one of Timberline’s firefighters, was in a serious motorcycle accident. The community support was incredible, including several fund raisers one of which was held at Roy’s Last Shot. Jimi spent four months in the ICU at Saint Anthony’s Hospital, followed by six months of learning to walk, talk, drive, and care for himself at Craig Hospital. (more…)

Saturdays, August 22 and 29th in Central City the musical melodrama “Call Me Ned” is presented outdoors. The quirky “frozen dead-guy” stored in a Tuff Shed near Nederland is the reason Nederland has celebrated Frozen Dead Guy Days since 2002. But, what happens if the monthly ice delivery is interrupted? On a date not publicized and limited to school staff and graduating seniors, Gilpin held a socially responsible graduation. Held on the football field, Covid safety procedures were in place. Will be greatly missed after 27 years of serving the Gilpin community

After 27 years of serving Gilpin County, Division Chief Tom Ihme will be retiring from the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office on September 1. Tom started his career with the Sheriff’s Office in 1993 as a dispatcher and has since served in many capacities throughout the years. Tom attended the police academy to become a certified peace officer in the State of Colorado (POST). (more…)

Funding grants to Gilpin County Extension Office will provide leadership training, substance abuse prevention, and life skills

The Gilpin County Extension office recently won two grants: The Substance Abuse Block Grant and the Tony Grampsas Youth Services grant. All of the awarded money will be put towards youth workshops for Gilpin students. While many details are still in the works for both workshops, they will work to provide leadership training, substance abuse prevention, and life skills. (more…)

Launched in Lake Gulch south of Central City

On July 4, 1872, William B. Walling launched a steamboat on the lake at the head of Lake Gulch, south of Central City (about where the Gold Mountain Village apartments are now). It was the first steamboat launched in Colorado. John Bennett claimed 155 acres of land around the lake in 1862 for ranching, but by 1864 he had branched out into the resort business.
