The long road from Poland to fulfill a dream

Aleksandra (Sandra) Zapala was raised in Poland, one of six children. She married her husband who was a coal miner in the late 60’s. Mr. Zapala’s brother had come to work in America, so was able to join him in 1977. Sandra was left with her family in Poland until she was able to join her husband. Mr. Zapala was working at the Redstone Coal Mine between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. Originally, he had planned to bring his wife, Sandra, 11 year old son, and 8 year old (more…)

Harvey Merle McCollum passed away on Christmas Day 2019, in Hotchkiss, CO. He was born in Rollinsville, CO, to parents Donald and Roberta McCollum. He spent his childhood roaming the mountains and foothills of the Front Range while attending the small elementary school in Rollinsville.
Harvey attended the Nederland Middle Senior High School through ninth grade and then attended a Vo-Tech program for mechanics. After a year, he proceeded to on-the-job training with (more…)

Nevadaville, Gilpin County, June 4, 1878 – This is one of the oldest mining towns of Colorado. It is reached by passing through Central City, and following Nevada Gulch up for nearly one and a half miles. The famous Burrough’s lode was discovered in 1859, just after the discovery of the big Gregory mine near Central. At the same time a great many miners came looking for gold in the gulch. A snapshot of local history provided by the Nederland Area Historical Society
The historic Gillaspie House, built in 1907, displays clothing, accessories, and furnishings found in typical early Nederland homes. The Gillaspie House is located at 363 N Bridge Street, a block up from the Mining Museum at the traffic circle in Nederland.

City Council looks at use options for Scarlett’s Casino

Council met with Staff to review a proforma for the former Scarlett’s Casino building which was gifted to the City earlier this year. Arleen Taniwaki, owner of ArLand LLC presented a Proforma Analysis for the Scarlett’s building for best economic uses for the City.
