    On Aug. 21, you will have a chance to see a total eclipse of the sun for the first time in our lifetime. And so will several hundred thousand of your closest friends and neighbors. That is why the Colorado Department of Transportation is asking anyone who is planning to drive to Wyoming or Nebraska (both in the “totality” path of the eclipse) to be prepared for a lot of traffic, delays and headaches for this unique event.     Colorado Parks and Wildlife has confirmed that human DNA has been found on the claws of the bear euthanized after the attack of a 19-year old male Sunday morning in Ward. A full necropsy of the 4+ year old, 280 lb. male bear was performed at the agency’s Wildlife Health Lab in Fort Collins. Evidence collected was sent to a Wyoming forensics lab which confirmed the findings. (more…)

    Summer is bursting with blossoms! We so appreciate the short time of year that allows us to enjoy the outdoors without excessive amounts of protection. The nice rains have given relief to the abundance of warmth from skies with few clouds. The heavy late snow has made everything so very green, some lighter colors of green and some darker. Yet, the range of weeks the different blossoms take at various elevations keep a variety of blossoms drawing pollinators to them and eager critters to graze on the abundance of flowers. (more…)

    Overlooking the City of Central and Black Hawk stands a large stone building. At 228 1st High Street (appropriately named) is the Gilpin History Museum. This 3-story building is only open in the summer because when the building was built, originally a school house, there was no indoor heating other than fireplaces. It is now open from Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm until Labor Day. (more…)

After all, weeds can be pretty, and doesn’t that make them flowers? So I went to the CSU Extension’s class entitled, “Noxious Weeds of Gilpin County and How to Control Them,” presented at the Gilpin County Fair Barn on Saturday, July 8 by Irene Shonle. (more…)

    Born, reared and educated in Bureau County, Illinois, at the early age of 23 years, in the spring of 1859, J.W. Fassett struck out for the gold fields of Colorado. Driving a covered wagon with three yoke of oxen he crossed the Mississippi at Rock Island, passed through Iowa City and Des Moines to reach Council Bluffs, Iowa. Following a brief visit there, he crossed the plains via the Platte route with a party of several other Argonauts. (more…)

    Timberline FPD hosted a public forum for residents on May 15. Chief Paul Ondr explained the need for this upcoming inclusion election. Currently, Timberline covers approximately 125 square miles in both Gilpin and Boulder County. The inclusion model would extend its boundaries to 173 square miles, though there’s nothing “square” about its shape, which covers south of Nederland to the north of Idaho Springs. (more…)

Our family had a cabin in Aspen Springs for four years when he had a heart attack while talking to his boss on the phone, preparing for a transfer.
