    Northern Front Range Recreational Sport Shooting Management Partnership Project

    On November 6, the Gilpin County Community Center was the site of an event that may shape the future sport shooting on federally owned property in Gilpin County. The Northern Front Range Recreational Sport Shooting Management Partnership (RSSMP) hosted the event that was attended by about 60 Gilpin Citizens, County Commissioners, and members of the Sheriff’s Department. All in attendance are concerned with the increased shooting activity on nearby Forest Service System property. (more…)

    Many of us have seen a hawk perched in the top of a tall pine, or we’ve been startled by an owl that has swooped in front of our windshield. Perhaps we’ve been fortunate enough to spot an eagle as it soared in wide circles high in the sky. Seldom do we have the privilege of seeing one of these raptors for more than a brief glimpse.     Four teens in a car cruise around the parking area behind the school building. Good kids, just having fun. The driver, messing around, sends the car into a drift near a slope created by recent excavation. Disastrously, it careens over the edge, rolls, and crashes into a car driven by a school administrator. After a few moments of silent shock, the grim reality becomes apparent that six lives have been forever changed by a split-second reckless decision. (more…)

    Every day brings more aspen leaves turning, but predicting peak color and how good the show will be is always an imperfect science. We know why the leaves change: there is a decrease in photosynthetic activity as the days get shorter in the fall. The yellow color that shines in September is always there, it is just masked by the green of chlorophyll all summer. As chlorophyll stops being produced, the yellow pigment from carotenoids is revealed. But the ‘when’ and the coloration are less predictable. (more…)

Gilpin County Elementary School received a Performance accreditation rating. Gilpin County Secondary School earned a Performance rating.     Golfers hit the links last Friday, August 25, in the Gilpin County Education Foundation’s (GCEF) 12th annual Gilpin Golf Classic. 51 golfers competed in teams at the Evergreen Golf Course, with the goal of raising funds to benefit Gilpin County students.
