    Thursday, August 9, brought some life back again to the Gilpin County School for the annual Back to School night. This has become a bit of a ritual for the kids to reconnect with their school, friends, and teachers, and an opportunity to start out the new school year on the right foot.   In an effort to become more paperless, the staff had several computers set up on a table in the atrium.     The Evergreen Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) performed an 1860’s style flag presentation at Washington Hall in Central City on Wednesday, August 1.

    On that date in 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation admitting Colorado as the 38th state. Accordingly, August 1, 2018, marked Colorado’s 142nd birthday. (more…)

Travis Wright and Kate Wright on Tuesday, July 31st at 7 pm at the Gilpin County Public Library. The event will include rarely-seen photographs from the newly-announced John Trezise Archive for Rollins Pass Imagery and the authors will discuss the significance of archaeological work being done on Rollins Pass to help document 10,000 years of history.     Cormorants take up residence in Gilpin County

    They are big, black, with long necks and beaks. Anyone who has driven past Kriley Pond on Hwy 46 has seen them on the inlet spit sunning themselves and looking for a quick meal. What are those birds? They’re Neotropic cormorant, Phalacrocorax brasilianus aka Double Crested Cormorants. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife Volunteer, Carl Salazar, some folks call them “Willets.” Whatever you call them, they are a fascinating bird with an interesting story.     It’s still fun to travel! Despite all the hassles of security check-ins, the world is an exciting place to venture in.  I just finished three fun and exhausting weeks in six different countries. I loved every minute of it! Yes, even the “not so clear information” became clear with the help of many lovely people to guide me along.
