With the COVID-19 pandemic, Gilpin County High School posted graduation online. On a date not publicized and limited to school staff and graduating seniors, Gilpin held a socially responsible graduation. Held on the football field, Covid safety procedures were in place. Will be greatly missed after 27 years of serving the Gilpin community

After 27 years of serving Gilpin County, Division Chief Tom Ihme will be retiring from the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office on September 1. Tom started his career with the Sheriff’s Office in 1993 as a dispatcher and has since served in many capacities throughout the years. Tom attended the police academy to become a certified peace officer in the State of Colorado (POST). (more…)

Funding grants to Gilpin County Extension Office will provide leadership training, substance abuse prevention, and life skills

The Gilpin County Extension office recently won two grants: The Substance Abuse Block Grant and the Tony Grampsas Youth Services grant. All of the awarded money will be put towards youth workshops for Gilpin students. While many details are still in the works for both workshops, they will work to provide leadership training, substance abuse prevention, and life skills. (more…)

Launched in Lake Gulch south of Central City

On July 4, 1872, William B. Walling launched a steamboat on the lake at the head of Lake Gulch, south of Central City (about where the Gold Mountain Village apartments are now). It was the first steamboat launched in Colorado. John Bennett claimed 155 acres of land around the lake in 1862 for ranching, but by 1864 he had branched out into the resort business. Virtual classes for real students designed for best learning models and to keep everyone healthy

The Gilpin school board announced that they will be doing virtual school for at least a month starting off. They decided to rescind in-person school because of the rising COVID-19 cases. Gilpin schools did have nine weeks of remote learning last school year in reaction to the coronavirus pandemic. An online learning plan has been created based on trial and error from last year. In 1948 cable television was born to service remote areas of Arkansas, Oregon, and Pennsylvania bringing network television to homes too far from broadcast antennas to get reception. Forty years later, the cable television conglomerates were set to dominate television viewing for a price consumers were willing to pay.
