Gilpin H.S. athletes bring season to a close

Jack Ball Goes to State
The 2018 CHSAA Class 2A State Championships Meet is taking place in Lakewood this weekend, May 17-19, at Jeffco Stadium. Senior Jack Ball is Gilpin High School’s representative in the state meet in the 400-meter and 800-meter races. Jack, currently seeded at sixth, will run on Thursday evening in the 400-meter preliminaries. He will also run on Friday afternoon in the 800-meter finals.
The 400-meter finals will be run at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday the 19th. If Jack finishes in the top nine of the prelims, he will also run in the finals, Head Coach Craig Ball reported. In that event, Jack would miss his high school graduation ceremony, which is at 11:00 Saturday morning.
Jack plans to attend Colorado Christian University in the fall and to run for the CCU track team.
Joe Shields Invitational
Varsity track and field athletes from Gilpin County High School competed in the Joe Shields Invitational Meet on May 10 in Kremmling. Eleven teams participated in the non-conference meet. Gilpin’s team kept up its season improvements.
“We recorded a bunch of new school records,” Coach Ball advised. “Jack Ball broke an 18-year record held by Jeff Marr in the 200-meter (24.7) to a new record of 23.93. Jack broke his own record in the 400-meter and also broke his own record in the 800-meter. He hopes to exceed those records at the state meet for the fastest time of the year.”
Austin Boulter broke his own record in the discus at 104’8.00.” Stephen King broke a 13-year record held by Zach Beasley in the long jump (16’10”) to 18’1.00.”
The Eagles boys’ team shattered three Gilpin relay records. The 2016 4×100-relay team (Angel Gomez, Braedyn Perez, Manny Gomez, and Chase Boulter) ran to a time of 49.6. The 2018 4×100 team (Nolan Lindberg, Stephan King, Austin Boulter, and Jack Ball) finished with a new 48.9 record.
The 4×200-relay record of 1:47 set in 2005 by Zach Beasley, Anthony Coal, Scott Headrick, and Eric Hill was replaced by the 2018 team’s new record of 1:46 (Blake Boulter, Nolan Lindberg, Stephen King, and Austin Boulter). Three members of this year’s team were freshmen, which bodes well for the future.
This year’s 4×400-relay team (Nolan Lindberg, Stephen King, Austin Boulter, and Jack Ball) shaved the record of 3:54 set in 2017 by Josh Trujillo, Jack Ball, Angel Gomez, and Chase Boulter to a new time of 3:52.
In girls’ results, Lena Warren gutted it out in the 3200-meter to a seventh-place finish and sped to ninth place in the 400-meter. Teammate Olivia Ball earned a 12th-place finish in the 400-meter.

Baseball District 7 Tourney Game
The Highland Huskies of Ault defeated the Gilpin Eagles varsity baseball team on May 8 in round one of the 2018 CHSAA baseball tournament for Class 2A, District 7. Highland won 10-0 over Gilpin in the away tourney match.
The Eagles close their season with two wins, including one league win. They beat Denver Academy and Rocky Mountain Lutheran this season.
Highland, which also bested Gilpin in March, went on to play Dayspring Christian Academy on May 11 in the District semi-finals. Dayspring won that battle and the championship game versus Dawson School 14-1, also on May 11.
Although Gilpin had no runs or hits in the game against Highland, there were a few highlights. Manny Gomez achieved 7 putouts, followed by Josh Trujillo with 5. Angel Gomez and Will Lorenz contributed 2 assists each. Lorenz, as Gilpin’s pitcher, struck out 5 batters.
Manuel Rivas was the winning pitcher for the Huskies.
