Third and Final competition

Peak to Peak Buckle Series completed their third horsemanship competitions to open the 25th Gilpin County Fair. The first two exhibition of horse and rider cooperation were in June and July. Saturday morning, August 19, 2017 was the third and final event. Riders entered into classes of competition as over 40, 18-39, 12-17 and under 11 years of age. Riders earn points for the place they take in five different events, with the grand winner earning the most points in all three events in their age range, to take home the coveted belt buckle.
The events that demonstrate skills the horse and rider have at that moment have been practiced over many previous sessions. Equitation or how well the horse and rider work together is judged by established standards. The others are timed events that can have time added to their score for crossing boundaries or not following the established path, and sometimes become disqualified.
Barrel races have three barrels the horse must make a cloverleaf circle around the closest two barrels then go around the farthest one to race back across the finish line. Flag race is taking a flag to the sand bucket on top of the first barrel riding around the outside of the barrel then over to the other barrel and sand bucket to get another flag out of it to race back across the timer line. Pole bending is six poles in straight line that must be raced to the farthest to weave around the closest and weave back up to the first one to race back across the timer line. Key hole is just a simple race from the timer line to a small chalk circle the horse must make a 180 degree turn around in to race back.
