Gilpin baseball team crushes Clear Creek 25-5

The Gilpin High School Eagles varsity baseball team mashed their opponents, the Clear Creek Golddiggers, in neutral non-conference play on March 17. The loss was especially hard for Clear Creek (CC), as the Gilpin players had joined with them on the same Golddiggers team in prior years. This is the second game for Gilpin’s new baseball team, and they now stand 2-0.

The Eagles hit hard and fast in the first inning with 9 runs. CC managed 1 run in the second inning, while Gilpin went scoreless. The Eagles came back to score 5 runs in the third inning to CC’s 2 and repeated the performance in the fourth inning. Another 6 runs by the Eagles in the fifth period brought the score to 25-5, with the final two innings showing no runs by either team.

Chase Boulter led Gilpin with 5 runs, followed by Bjorn Tomlinson, Eric Castillo, Jon Lovett, and Dalton Dziedzic each with 4.

Erik Lorenz was the top hitter with 3, while Tomlinson, Castillo, and Lovett each slugged 2.

Jon Gonzalez and Lorenz each had 3 RBI’s.

Gonzales also came in with a double.

The Golddiggers’ pitching proved a little wild, as they hit five Gilpin players; Gilpin returned the favor by hitting one of CC’s batters.

Gilpin had 12 walks, and both teams had 8 strikeouts.

Boulter stole bases on 3 occasions, followed by Dziedzic with 2 and Sam Snyder with 1. Boulter and Gonzalez also reached 2 bases on error.

Castillo was the winning pitcher for Gilpin, pitching 3 innings. Boulter also pitched 2 innings. Castillo gave up 3 runs and had 2 hits against his pitching. He struck out 4 batters. Boulter gave up 2 runs and had 1 hit against him, getting 6 strikeouts.

In fielding, Snyder, Gonzalez, Lorenz, and Lovett each had 1 fielder’s choice. Tomlinson had 6 put-outs, while Boulter followed with 5 and Castillo with 4. Tomlinson led in assists with 5.

The five CC players who scored runs were Chris Colle, Richard Allen, Ken Shankey, Jonah Rich, and Matt McNeil.

Allen, McNeil, Cody Marshall, and Thomas Wann each got 1 hit.

Adam Klemstein pitched for the Golddiggers.

Gilpin traveled to Elbert for the Elbert Invitational Meet on March 28. Results are as follows:

The girls’ varsity team placed 18^th out of 19 teams.

100-meter: Khristine Barr, 7^th, 14.37; Daria Simon, 24^th, 15.23; Aspen Nadeau, 27^th, 15.54.

200-meter: Barr, 9^th, 30.95; Simon, 26^th, 32.45; Nadeau, 35^th, 34.58.

Long jump: Barr, 10^th, 13’3.5”; Simon, 25^th, 9’9.00”.

Shot Put: Simon, 17^th, 23’11.00”.

Discus: Barr, 31^st, 50’3.00”.

The boys’ varsity team did not place.

200-meter: Manny Gomez, 30^th, 28.53; Tristan Mayer, 33^rd, 32.65.

400-meter: Mayer, 25^th, 1:15.30.
