    The Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Thursday, August 2, at 9:00 a.m. at the Gilpin County Courthouse. Those present were Chair Ron Engels, Commissioners Linda Isenhart and Gail Watson, County Attorney Jim Petrock, and Deputy Clerk to the Board Sharon Cate. The only amendment to the agenda was the addition of a resolution, #18-11, supporting grant applications for the rehabilitation of the Belvidere Theatre by the City of Central. (more…)

    February 2, 1936 – July 29, 2018

    Bill Lorenz passed away Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2018 and will be missed by everyone who knew him. Family members are wife Kay, children Heidi (Ed) Pasic, Lisa Artz, Tony (Mary) Lorenz, Stephanie (Al) Elio, and Jeff (Suzi) Lorenz. Also are sixteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A memorial service is tentatively planned for August 16th, but is not yet confirmed.     World War I lasted over four years, involved 32 countries, and killed nearly 9 million soldiers, with 10 million civilian casualties. The horrific conflict came to an end one hundred years ago this year, on November 11, 1918. In remembrance, the Gilpin History Museum has been presenting an exhibit this summer on our county’s participation. (more…)

    Talking to some local friends recently, we decided to take advantage of the beautiful Colorado weather and cool mountain temps by doing a day trip on a local Jeep trail. We discussed several local options that were more scenic than difficult, and decided on one of our favorites – the Jenny Creek Trail that parallels the Rollins Pass Road about halfway up to the Needles Eye Tunnel after turning off from Tolland Road out west of Rollinsville. Travis Wright and Kate Wright on Tuesday, July 31st at 7 pm at the Gilpin County Public Library. The event will include rarely-seen photographs from the newly-announced John Trezise Archive for Rollins Pass Imagery and the authors will discuss the significance of archaeological work being done on Rollins Pass to help document 10,000 years of history.     Cormorants take up residence in Gilpin County

    They are big, black, with long necks and beaks. Anyone who has driven past Kriley Pond on Hwy 46 has seen them on the inlet spit sunning themselves and looking for a quick meal. What are those birds? They’re Neotropic cormorant, Phalacrocorax brasilianus aka Double Crested Cormorants. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife Volunteer, Carl Salazar, some folks call them “Willets.” Whatever you call them, they are a fascinating bird with an interesting story.
