    Cormorants take up residence in Gilpin County

    They are big, black, with long necks and beaks. Anyone who has driven past Kriley Pond on Hwy 46 has seen them on the inlet spit sunning themselves and looking for a quick meal. What are those birds? They’re Neotropic cormorant, Phalacrocorax brasilianus aka Double Crested Cormorants. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife Volunteer, Carl Salazar, some folks call them “Willets.” Whatever you call them, they are a fascinating bird with an interesting story.     Saturday, June 23, 2018, at the Gilpin County Arena, Rick Newman announced the events for this year’s first Gymkhana event from Peak to Peak Equestrian, with the major sponsor being United Power. This year, there are only two competitions thrilling spectators with horse and rider cooperation. Last year’s third and final round in the series was during the 2017 Gilpin County Fair where the winners were awarded their Silver Buckles in the 4 age classes.     Popular tourist attraction reopens

    It took almost five years, but Boulder Falls has finally reopened to the public. Located between Nederland and Boulder on Hwy 119, the trail next to the scenic attraction was wiped out by the destructive floods of September, 2013.  1.2 million dollars were spent by Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks repairing the hiking trail, stabilizing slopes, and adding a new gabion rock wall. Access to Boulder Falls will remain open until November 1st when the trail closes for winter.

    Dr. Jerry Griess remembered

    March 16, 1932 – February 13, 2018

    Dr. Jerald “Jerry” A. Griess, 85, died Tuesday, February 13, 2018 in Murfreesboro, TN from complications related to his blood pressure and Parkinson’s Disease. In hospice care for four days, Jerry passed on peacefully in his sleep.

    Jerry was preceded in death by his first wife Roberta Griess and his parents Alfred and Frieda (Engelhardt) Griess. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Rosalie (more…)

    On Saturday morning, May 19th at 11:00 am, the American Legion Post 166 and VFW Post 7563 will hold the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Gilpin Veteran’s Memorial, at the Gilpin Community Center, and a dedication of the newly inscribed Veteran’s bricks that are set at the Memorial.     The Gilpin County Art Gallery will officially open its Juried Show, Saturday, June 2nd, at 10 am, for its 71st year of continued service. Manager Michele Roussel, Board Members and volunteers have prepared the iconic 1864 Washington Hall Building located at 117 Eureka Street in Central City. Artists from all around Colorado have brought wonderful, unusual and beautiful art of various media. A special fun evening of awards, entertainment, refreshments and fellowship will begin at 5 pm until 8 pm.
