Both boys’ and girls’ varsity soar over rival Nederland Panthers

The Gilpin Eagles varsity teams boosted their season record last week with several wins, including victories on the home court over the Nederland Panthers, Denver Academy Mustangs, and South Park (Fairplay) Burros. The boys won over all three of their opponents; the girls took a loss to South Park and did not play Denver Academy. (more…)
The Nuts and Bolts of Nominations

On Tuesday, 1/24/2017, the nominations for the Academy Awards were announced. I bet you were thinking, as you probably do every year, “Why wasn’t (fill in the blank) nominated?” It is a matter of frustration for the consumers of Hollywood goods when the Hollywood elite acknowledge the movies, performances, and work that don’t reflect the box office receipts. Cub Scout Pack 251 donates a deluxe wooden birdhouse to the school

The Gilpin County Board of Education held its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 7, at 7:00 p.m. Board members present were Craig Holmes, Brook Ramsey, Kersten Armstrong, and Steve Boulter. Member Charlotte Taylor was absent. Superintendent David MacKenzie and Secretary to the Board Gretchen Sechler were present. (more…)

J.R. Beverly was what one might refer to as a rolling stone, moving from place to place and opportunity to opportunity. In 1837, the Beverly’s lived in Thornville, Ohio, where on June 28th of that year his wife gave birth to a son they named William H. Beverly. In 1843, the Beverly’s welcomed J. M. Beverly into this world in Culpepper County, Virginia. Later that same year, the Beverly’s relocated to Edgar County, Illinois. By 1844, the Beverly family lived in Clark County, Ohio. (more…)
Union Colony Timberwolves take a side trip on Pickle Gulch

The basketball teams from Union Colony Prep of Greeley (UC) had a little side trip as they came to visit the Gilpin High School Eagles for league games on Tuesday, January 24. Junior varsity teams were to start at 4:00 that afternoon, followed by the girls’ varsity at 5:30 and the boys’ varsity at 7:00. Due to a little pardonable confusion, the Timberwolves were late. Seasonal closure in Boulder Canyon protects nesting birds of prey

To protect nesting golden eagles, the U.S. Forest Service will be implementing annual area closures in Boulder Canyon beginning Feb. 1, 2017. The closures include rock climbing spots at Eagle Rock, Blob Rock, Bitty Buttress and Security Risk in Boulder Canyon. These areas are located along Colorado Highway 119, approximately 1.5 miles east of Boulder Falls. (more…)

The regular season has officially come to an end and Gilpin County’s own Josh Trujillo (24-7) finds himself ranked 13th in the State of Colorado at 145lbs. Trujillo has absolutely dominated since winter break and is heading into Regionals with a lot of momentum having won 15 of his last 17 matches. (more…)

The Gilpin High School Eagles varsity basketball teams brought home losses after a tough week on the road. The boys’ and girls’ teams faced the Dawson School Mustangs of Lafayette on January 17 and the Heritage Christian Eagles of Fort Collins on January 20 in league battles. (more…)
Damien Sonsino sweeps Gilpin spelling bee

Gilpin County School held its annual spelling bee last Thursday, January 19, in the school auditorium. Eighth-grader Damien Sonsino defeated a field of 101 students in fourth through eighth grade to capture the school’s 2017 championship and the $100 first prize. (more…)
“The Founder” Movie Review

A big-screen biography opened recently called “The Founder” which tells the story of how Ray Kroc went from a Willy Loman type salesman to head of The McDonald’s Corporation. Well, that might be what the story is, but the plot is really about the two McDonald brothers whose innovative ideas were hijacked by a huckster and how they lost all rights to a billion dollar franchise. This is a story of greed and getting ahead regardless of who you hurt along the way. (more…)

Eagles Boys v. Lions
The Gilpin Eagles boys’ varsity flew by the Lyons Lions 43-33 in a league battle on Tuesday, January 10, on the Lions’ court. Gilpin and their hosts were neck-and-neck during the first three quarters of this exciting matchup, standing at 22-22 going into the final period. Eagles fans had a lot to scream about as their team poured it on in the fourth quarter with 21 points to win. (more…)
