Joseph S. Beaman was born in Bondorf, Baden, Germany, October 23, 1834, to Joseph and Elizabeth Beaman. He attended the School of Bondorf. At the age of 15, in 1849, he sailed with his mother and siblings aboard the steamer “Holyoke” from Havre, France to New Orleans, a 49-day ocean journey. (more…)

Tigerfish are the fiercest, most sought-after, and widespread freshwater game fish in Africa. Armed with interlocking razor-sharp teeth, when a tooth is lost another takes its place like a shark’s. Renowned implosion expert clears way for 23-story world-class resort hotel
The second golden era of Black Hawk has begun, with the city and casinos making hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements to attract more visitors. On Wednesday, December 21, at 8:30 a.m., Monarch Casino Black Hawk imploded most of its 19-year-old old 5-story parking garage to clear space for a world-class 23-story hotel and spa as part of its $400 million dollar, four-diamond resort development plan. A Year in Review

Attendance at the theaters in 2016 was stagnant. Prior to the Christmas weekend, the domestic gross in ticket sales was $11 billion, just shy of 2015’s $11.1 billion. With blockbusters like Rogue One, Sing, and La La Land still raking in the dough, this year will likely surpass 2015; however, average ticket prices have also risen by about two percent, so the increase in sales is nothing to write home about. Gilpin County Youth and High School Tournaments

The snowstorm of Friday night, December 16, put a stop to many people’s plans, but it was no match for the Gilpin County Youth Wrestlers. The club hosted its second major meet of the season, the Metro Junior Wrestling League tournament, at Gilpin County High School. Several wrestlers posted outstanding results. (more…)

Girls’ varsity loses a 35-33 squeaker to Rocky Mountain Lutheran

14th Annual Winter Arts Festival hosts 50+ vendors plus local charities and musicians

Mountain folk headed to the Gilpin Community Center (GCC) on Saturday, December 10, for the 14th Annual Winter Arts Festival. It was a great way to support more than fifty local and regional arts and crafts vendors while shopping for unique gifts for family members. It was also an opportunity to donate to worthy causes, enjoy art by Gilpin school children, and to visit with friends old and new. (more…)
