September 14, 1945 – December 6, 2018
Joanne M. Grapes, 73 of Golden, CO passed away December 6, 2018 surrounded by her family at Collier Hospice Center after a hard battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born September 14, 1945 in Spencer, SD to Lawrence and Lorraine (Cobernes) Wise.
Married to Donald D. Grapes on May 30, 1963, they ran the family dairy farm, then they traveled around until they settled in Black Hawk, CO and opened D&J Excavating in July of 1979. This community is where Don and Joanne raised their family, participated in (more…)

Glenn T. Hoynoski, 65, devoted loving husband and brother passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2018. Glenn used his fire protection engineering expertise to protect others and to build and renovate the many projects he and his wife Ginnie did together. Glenn is survived by the love of his life, Ginnie Knotts Hoynoski, brother Mark and family of CO, and sister Laurel and family of NC. Glenn is predeceased by his parents, Diane & Tom Hoynoski. At Limon Tourney with 26 schools competing

The Gilpin Eagles boys’ and girls’ high school varsity basketball teams faced the Rocky Mountain Lutheran Eagles (RML – Denver) in action-packed Gilpin home games on Wednesday, November 28. The Lady Eagles lost to RML 29-26, while the Gilpin boys came in with a 70-61 defeat. (more…)

Traditional topping off ceremony in Black Hawk
PRESS RELEASE – Monarch Casino Resort Spa celebrated a major construction milestone on Thursday, November 29: reaching its final height of 23 stories. To celebrate this historic achievement, Monarch Casino Resort Spa joined with the City of Black Hawk and PCL Construction to host a traditional topping off ceremony featuring a beam signing by all crew members. Attached to the beam, an evergreen tree covered in holiday lights was raised to the top of the building and visible to Black Hawk visitors as they enter the city on Highway 119. (more…)

Lighting ceremony kicks off the holiday season

Black Hawk’s Mayor David Spellman and City officials hosted the annual lighting ceremony to kick off the holidays at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, at the gazebo at Stroehle Square at the corner of Gregory and Main Streets. The evening was crisply cool but pleasant, darkness was just setting in, and crowds were gathering to munch snowman cookies and warm up with mugs of cocoa or cider. Visitors donned free Santa hats as they anticipated the countdown to the lighting of one of Colorado’s largest displays. (more…)
