    Charlotte Taylor has helped steer the ship of the Gilpin County RE-1 school district for the past eight years as a vital member of the school board. Taylor’s term of service was completed with the November 7 board meeting, during which her fellow members and the assembled public celebrated her many contributions. School board president Craig Holmes presented Taylor with a framed resolution proclaiming November as “Charlotte Taylor Recognition Month.” (more…)

    With Gregory Street open in Black Hawk, the area was not quiet where more construction is about to begin, as other projects are still being wrapped up. Mayor and Alderman David Spellman requested the meeting begin. New Fire Fighters; Matt Bowman and Cody Kalb were at the bell ringing post. Three rings with controls on the ropes made the signal to call the City of Black Hawk City Council Meeting to Order at 3:00 pm Wednesday, November 8, 2017. (more…)

    This week we honor our Veterans – men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country.  Many of these soldiers come back to their homes wounded in mind and spirit. PTSD, (Post-traumatic stress disorder), TBI (Traumatic brain injury), Sleep Disorders, Anxiety and Depression are just a few results of war.  The VA and insurance companies offer standard medical treatment and “talk therapies.” “Talk therapies do not usually work with soldiers suffering PTSD because they have to re-live the experiences all over again. Soldiers are reluctant to talk about the horrors that have lived through,” says Blair. “The current systems are failing them.” (more…)

    Eagles v. West Grand

    The Gilpin County H.S. Eagles football team was denied a win against the West Grand Mustangs (Kremmling) in the last regular season battle on Friday, October 27. The Eagles were unable to even get on the board in the away league game, losing 52-0. It was Gilpin’s only league loss this season; the Eagles’ record fell to 7-2 overall, while West Grand is still undefeated with a 9-0 record. (more…)

    Gilpin County has an abundance of sunny and rip-roaring seniors. The Gilpin County Senior Living organization (GCSL), hosted their 3rd annual fundraiser Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the high school. A hearty and delicious lasagna dinner was created by this group for the sole purpose of raising funds to build affordable, senior-friendly rental housing for Gilpin County Seniors. (more…)

Perhaps we’ve been fortunate enough to spot an eagle as it soared in wide circles high in the sky. Seldom do we have the privilege of seeing one of these raptors for more than a brief glimpse.     Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin Patch entered Central City’s “Big-T” parking lot with the big winds. Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, volunteers from the Central City Fire Department Foundation and Main Street Central City met the October winds with gusto. Customers galore, wrapped in winter gear, filled ‘little red’ wagons with pumpkins of various sizes. The little ones quickly chose the littlest pumpkins. (more…)

    The Gregory Street thoroughfare has been in the state of flux for 158 years. It is a primary artery joining two incredible and historic cities, Black Hawk and Central City. According to Black Hawk’s Mayor David Spellman, the Gregory Street “HARD” District is right on schedule. HARD was coined by Spellman and the Black Hawk City Council. It stands for “History Appreciation Recreation Destination.” The future distilleries moving to the city like the phrase because HARD refers to their industry. The Mayor likes it because it ties in with the vision he has embraced for several years – that Black Hawk become a friendlier, year-round resort destination. (more…)
