Access to fresh, wholesome, and healthy food

Last Saturday morning, over 300 pounds of produce was delivered to the High Country Professional Building where volunteers brought the produce inside, and quickly started sorting, cleaning, and counting. By noon, members of the Holistic Homestead CSA started arriving, bags in hand ready to pick up their share of tomatoes, onions, carrots, oranges, apples, lettuce, broccoli, potatoes and more. (more…)

April 28, 1960 – February 4, 2018
Central City resident Stuart Jennings Wyatt fell back into the arms of his creator and guided back to heavens this past Sunday the 4th of February. Stu was loved by everyone who met him, a friend to all, and a wonderful father to his two children whom so dearly he loved. Stu, a native of Arvada, was a man of incredible talent, creativity and personality. After High School Stu attended the Colorado Institute of Art and used his incredible artistic talents to eventually run his own a successful graphic design business for well over twenty years. The Central City Council met with Staff on February 6, 2018 for a work session prior to the regular council meeting. The Council heard a presentation from Live Well Colorado and discussed the “in-lieu of” parking fees that were tabled from an earlier meeting. (more…)
Jiselle Osteboe blasts through the competition to win top prize

Fifth grader Jiselle Osteboe was the queen bee at Gilpin County School’s annual spell-down on Thursday, February 1, in the school auditorium. Jiselle bored through five rounds of sticky words to win with “jackhammer,” meaning “a rock drill of the hammer type usually held in the hands of the operator.” Jiselle defeated a field of 110 students in fourth through eighth grade to capture the championship and the $100 first prize. She is eligible to compete in the state spelling bee on March 10 if she chooses to do so. (more…)

H.S. basketball action roundup

Boys’ and girls’ varsity teams from Gilpin County High School enjoyed several wins last week as they traveled to Denver, Nederland, and Fairplay. Gilpin’s boys now have a 7-8 overall record, including a winning 5-3 record for conference games. The girls are 7-8 also, and 2-5 in conference play. (more…)

Varsity basketball teams bow to Union Colony and Highland

Both the Gilpin H.S. varsity boys’ and girls’ hoops squads faced defeat this past week at home and away as they battled the Highland Huskies of Ault and the Union Colony Prep Timberwolves (UCP) of Greeley. The matches called for the young athletes to keep striving, even as it became obvious that they would go down to their opponents. The fact that they continued to try their hardest during adversity proved them victors in the true sense. (more…)

In Norse mythology, Ullr was the son of grain goddess Sif and stepson of the thunder god Thor. Part of pre-Christian Germanic religion that was passed down orally through sagas, many details had been lost by the time it was recorded in the 13th century. What is known about Ullr is that he was a deity of prime importance. Handsome and warlike, his archery and hunting skills were legendary. Black Hawk City Council met at 3 pm on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 in their chambers upstairs at 211 Church Street, Black Hawk, CO. The traditional bell rang to signal that the City Council session had begun. The honored bell ringer was Ethan Watel of Baseline in Denver who contracts with the City of Black Hawk to facilitate appropriate designs for construction projects. (more…)

Gilpin High School’s gym was a hive of activity on Saturday, January 27, as the Eagles hosted several teams at a wrestling invitational. Turnout was good, and grapplers persevered through five rounds, starting at 9:00 a.m. and lasting through mid-afternoon. (more…)
Mayor boasts and brags about Central City

On Tuesday, January 16, 2018, Mayor Kathy Heider gave the annual State of the City address to Council, Staff, and citizens gathered in City Hall, proclaiming 2017 to be “Another productive year.” There were six distinct points the Mayor focused on: the financial position, grant funding, economic development, marketing, capital improvements, and community development. September 5, 1926 – January 28, 2018
William Joseph Ewing, 91, peacefully passed away in his home in Black Hawk surrounded by loved ones on Sunday January 28, 2018.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Wilma, and son, James. He is survived by his children Cathy, Chuck (Isela), Bart (Mary Kate), and Debbie Ellsworth. He was the proud and loving grandfather to 16 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. (more…)

Living history walked and talked in Golden Gate Canyon’s Grange Community Center, Friday evening, January 19, 2018. The 6:30 pm start time was happily delayed for the History of Golden Gate Canyon meeting. The delay was to accommodate the crowd with more chairs, and a sound system to go with the video screen already in place. The audience quickly grew to of over 100 people scattered between four generations of locals. (more…)

As Old County Courthouse renovations continue, Gilpin County’s Board of County Commissioners are meeting temporarily in Central City Hall. Present at the 2nd meeting of 2018, on Tuesday, January 23, were District #1 Commissioner and Chair Ron Engels, District #2 Commissioner Linda Isenhart, and District #3 Commissioner Gail Watson. Also participating in the meeting were County Manager Leslie Klusmire, County Attorney Jim Petrock, and Deputy Clerk Sharon Cate documenting minutes. (more…)
