The Gilpin Historical Society (GHS) and Central City’s Wild Bunch are blessed by the show of support demonstrated Saturday, August 10th at Roy’s Last Shot Restaurant in mid-Gilpin County. Sole inhabitant upholds civic pride of once booming mining center

Rocky Mountain News, June 3, 1930: “Nevadaville, one-time boom mining camp of the Central City district, is not dead—not by a long shot and the civic pride of its one inhabitant. Merely suggest that it is a ghost city, and Leonard Nichols, aged hermit, will resent the imputation. New distinction has come to Nichols, distinction given to few men in the United States. He is the sole inhabitant of the entire settlement. Uncle Sam sent a census enumerator to Nevadaville the other day. The enumerator looked high and low, then recorded “One Resident.” (more…)

Evolutionary Jazz at the Gilpin Library Summer Concert Series

We love our jazz in Gilpin County. The Central City Jazz Festival in June hosted two dancin’-in-the-street days of spirited New Orleans funk and liberated jamming. By contrast, the jazz ensemble Communion who performed at the Gilpin Library on July 31 is on a different musical evolutionary path. (more…)
Car Shows to Go and Gilpin County Senior Living

On Saturday, July 27, the Gilpin County Seniors held their first annual car show and swap meet sponsored by Cars Shows to Go and Gilpin Senior Services. About 50 plus proud owners and their snazzy vehicles along with 10 vendors gathered at the Gilpin County School parking lot to strut their stuff or to sell their wares. The Car Show and Swap Meet benefited the Gilpin County Senior Program through car entry fees, vendor fees, and raffle ticket sales. (more…)

June 2, 1955 – July 23, 2019
Leslie Green, of Gilpin County, died last week. Leslie was born in Lakeview, New York on June 2, 1955. She moved to Colorado in 1980, where she had two children and attended college. Leslie worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 20 years.
Leslie is survived by her mother; Joan Nowland; her daughter, Leah Green of Boise, ID; her son Gabriel Green of Houston, TX; and three brothers, along with other extended family members. (more…)
Council approves trailhead bridge project for October installation

Last Wednesday, July 24, 2019, Black Hawk City Council regular meeting highlights include a Special Election Agreement and a Change Order for the Hidden Treasure Trailhead. Isle of Capri General Manager Rodney Turlan rang the bell to kick off the session that was called to order promptly at 3:00 p.m. Mayor Spellman called the Black Hawk City Council to order followed by Roll Call, then led in the Pledge of Allegiance. What it takes to put on a good show

Oh the thrills of muttons, broncs and bulls at our very own free Bulls and Beads Gilpin County Rodeo! 2019 We had better weather than some of the previous bull riding going back to the 1990’s. Moving the fair and rodeo to mid-July this year, rather than mid-August may have helped avoid the heavier rains often found later in summer. Rain or shine, Gilpin packs the stands to watch the ones who take great care to stay on for the 8 second ride of the feisty bulls and bucking horses, as well as quick out of the gate sheep with young’uns’ holding on a best they can. Masonic Lodge Open House, Pancake Breakfast, and Antique Gun Demo

Nevadaville may be considered a ghost town, but those are not ghosts who live there and keep its recollections alive. Real people have brought back to us, with much restoration work, the Nevadaville Masonic Lodge No. 4 completed in 1879 on Main Street, across from the original City Hall. With improvements to the building in the last few years, the continuing members have had an annual fund raising pancake breakfast. (more…)

Presents “A Weekend in New York”

In these tumultuous political times and sweltering weather, it was a pleasure to gather Wednesday evening at the Gilpin Library, where harpist Kathryn Harms treated the assembled group to “A Weekend in New York.” First stop was afternoon tea at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
