Vintage 1950’s hot rods were spotted on Thursday, September 15th converging on Central City and Black Hawk from all over the state and beyond, causing the community to wonder what was going on. It was soon apparent by Friday noon when over 150 vintage cars roared up to the KOA for tech inspection after the morning reliability run from Golden to Central City to kick off the Hot Rod Hill Climb. The leaves are turning in Gilpin County which means it was time for the annual Gilpin Art Studio Tour. This was the fifth year for the tour in which local artists opened up their studios; whether in their homes, garages, or businesses, to the public for an intimate look at where and how they make their creations. Silently she stares from the Teller House floor, a stoic princess with a varnished smile. The princess’ portrait is the most famous painting and the most often viewed in the United States. It is the most exploited and protected attraction in Central City and a major Colorado attraction. Thousands of people have gazed upon it. However, the real beauty queen of Central City has never worn a proper crown. Her likeness has, over the years, been credited to the artist’s wife, and to the famed blonde bombshell of Colorado, Elizabeth “Baby” Doe Tabor, or perhaps to Silver Dollar, Mrs. Tabor’s brunette daughter. Born in 1838 in New York, Cramer was one of the tens of thousands of men who headed west during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Eagles’ volleyball squad wins over Peyton in West Grand tournament

Gilpin Eagles High School sports season is off and running. The football and volleyball teams have begun their seasons in the 2A Mile High League this year, a change from the 1A 5280 League in previous years. The change is due to increased enrollment at Gilpin, so the school is now in the higher classification. It will prove challenging, as the teams will meet some new opponents. (more…)
Great Central City Beer Festival 2016

On Saturday, August 27, 2016, Central City hosted its fifth annual beer festival with three bands, 15 vendors, 19 breweries, and more than 50 beers for sampling. The festival reflects a nationwide trend among microbrews of increasing sophistication and finesse among their brews; whether from need to stand apart or desire for uniqueness is open for debate.
