In late 1871, J.C. Fisher opened the new Black Hawk Roller Skating Rink on the corner of Gregory and Church Streets. The location was, perhaps conveniently, one door east of Dr. W.H. Rice’s office. Admission to the rink was initially twenty-five cents while the use of roller skates was an additional quarter, but this was eventually dropped in favor of a fifty-cent admission fee that included the use of skates. With Senior Night and two final games

The Gilpin Eagles boys’ varsity basketball team played their final two games of the season last week finishing with a loss in overtime in one game, and a decisive win in the other. Coach Tony Lorenz celebrated for 28 years of helping youth

Early in the meeting Kelly Bayne shared with the board that Tony Lorenz would be retiring from coaching. Tony has spent the last 28 years sharing his talents and leadership with Gilpin youth both at the school and at the Community Center coaching Middle School Basketball, Football, Baseball and Little League Baseball. Tony graduated from Gilpin High in 1982 and went on to be a founder of the Gilpin Little League program (more…)
Come hang out with your friends and neighbors who share your passion

Quirky Quilters, a group of quilters, knitters, crocheters, and needleworkers from Nederland and Gilpin County invite others, who enjoy the same pursuits, to their monthly show-and-tell gatherings at 10:30 am – noon the first Tuesday of each month. Pre-COVID-19, the group met at the Nederland Public Library and will do so again, when it is safe. For now, the meetings are held virtually on Zoom. (more…)

Demonstrating qualities of patriotism, leadership, dependability and service

A 2021 Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Mountain Rendezvous Chapter, Good Citizens scholarship was awarded to Damian Sonsino, a senior at Gilpin High School. He is currently the valedictorian with a 4.3 GPA. His guidance counselor is Kim Cobb. The DAR scholarship is to encourage and reward the qualities of patriotism, leadership, dependability and service. (more…)

1 Win and 2 Losses in League Play

The Gilpin Eagles boys’ varsity basketball team played three 3A/2A/1A Mile High League games in the past week resulting in two losses and one win. With four more League games scheduled by March the 5th the team currently stands at two wins and five losses in the League and 4-6 wins to losses overall. Due to school implemented Covid-19 safety restrictions, spectators were allowed in limited numbers during the first 2 games while no Gilpin spectators were allowed to attend Saturday’s game. (more…)

Locals rely on their furry friends to fill social void

During the pandemic, folks have been staying home more than usual. As such, feelings of loneliness have become worse than ever before. Besides family, pets have also helped Gilpin residents remain positive during the pandemic. Archer O’Brien, Cassidy Wood, and Aucklynn Sacco have relied on their dogs for fun times and as a much-needed quarantine buddy. (more…)
