Gilpin basketball squads take losses to Dawson School and Heritage Christian

The Gilpin High School Eagles varsity basketball teams brought home losses after a tough week on the road. The boys’ and girls’ teams faced the Dawson School Mustangs of Lafayette on January 17 and the Heritage Christian Eagles of Fort Collins on January 20 in league battles. (more…)
Damien Sonsino sweeps Gilpin spelling bee

Gilpin County School held its annual spelling bee last Thursday, January 19, in the school auditorium. Eighth-grader Damien Sonsino defeated a field of 101 students in fourth through eighth grade to capture the school’s 2017 championship and the $100 first prize. (more…)
“The Founder” Movie Review

A big-screen biography opened recently called “The Founder” which tells the story of how Ray Kroc went from a Willy Loman type salesman to head of The McDonald’s Corporation. Well, that might be what the story is, but the plot is really about the two McDonald brothers whose innovative ideas were hijacked by a huckster and how they lost all rights to a billion dollar franchise. This is a story of greed and getting ahead regardless of who you hurt along the way. (more…)

Eagles Boys v. Lions
The Gilpin Eagles boys’ varsity flew by the Lyons Lions 43-33 in a league battle on Tuesday, January 10, on the Lions’ court. Gilpin and their hosts were neck-and-neck during the first three quarters of this exciting matchup, standing at 22-22 going into the final period. Eagles fans had a lot to scream about as their team poured it on in the fourth quarter with 21 points to win. (more…)

Movie Review

Director Theodore Melfi (Winding Roads, St. Vincent) directed, produced, and co-wrote the film “Hidden Figures.” This movie will be the first to knock Rogue One off the box office charts and it is worthy to do so. “Hidden Figures” had a limited release prior to the New Year with a major release across the country in January. Producers will sometimes do this if they think their movie is Oscar worthy. (more…)

Top youth wrestlers compete last weekend in Gilpin meet

Gilpin County Youth Wrestling
The Crazy Train stopped in Gilpin County on Saturday, January 7, and the result was some of the highest-quality youth wrestling seen this season in Colorado. In the Rocky Mountain region, “Crazy Train” is the unofficial moniker for the circuit traveled by the top youth wrestlers; with no other Colorado youth tournaments scheduled last weekend, many of those wrestlers were at the Gilpin meet, held at Gilpin County School. Joseph S. Beaman was born in Bondorf, Baden, Germany, October 23, 1834, to Joseph and Elizabeth Beaman. He attended the School of Bondorf. At the age of 15, in 1849, he sailed with his mother and siblings aboard the steamer “Holyoke” from Havre, France to New Orleans, a 49-day ocean journey. (more…)
