    Central City Council Approves Gregory Street Paving Project

    The Central City Council met with staff for a work session on the pending end of the marijuana licensing moratorium. The temporary suspension ends November 30, 2017 and the Council needs to give direction regarding changes to current code or staying with the current rule. Community Development Director Ray Rears presented a report to the Council from City Staff regarding this issue with four things to consider. (more…)

    Volleyball v. Warriors and Falcons

    The Gilpin High School Lady Eagles varsity team faced two teams last week that were slightly younger and less experienced than Gilpin. The Eagles came out on top in home conference play against the Longmont Christian Warriors (LC) on Tuesday, September 12, winning 3-0. Two nights later, on the 14th, Gilpin traveled to play the Front Range Christian Falcons (FR) of Littleton, again scoring a 3-0 victory. (more…)

    The Gilpin Elementary Theatre Department proudly raised the curtain on “A Taste of Broadway” on Friday evening, September 14, in the Gilpin School auditorium. The event was a professional quality fundraiser for the elementary performing arts and included hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and a Broadway cabaret followed by dessert. (more…)

    The Gilpin Eagles rolled over the Simla Cubs 60-50 last Saturday, September 9, in an excellent contest on the Eagles’ home turf. A half-hour lightning delay got the high-scoring match off to a late start, but it was wise not to have players out on the field in threatening weather. (more…)

    June 26th, 1956 – September 10th, 2017

    Roy Dowell Blake was born at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado to Dowell and Nancy Blake. He was raised in Black Hawk, Colorado and went to school in Idaho Spring where he graduated from high school in 1974.He moved to Alaska after high school where he worked in various trades over the years. It was there that he enlisted in the US Navy to serve his country and give his life direction. (more…)

    Saturday, September 9th at 2:00 pm, the Stroehle House was open for the semi-annual High Tea. This historic home at 231 Chase Street in Black Hawk has been recently renovated to Victorian times when the home was occupied by the Stroehle family. The home was donated to the Gilpin Historical Society by a cousin of the home’s occupants as requested as a generous gift to be kept as a historical reminder of ways and days now gone. (more…)

    Every day brings more aspen leaves turning, but predicting peak color and how good the show will be is always an imperfect science. We know why the leaves change: there is a decrease in photosynthetic activity as the days get shorter in the fall. The yellow color that shines in September is always there, it is just masked by the green of chlorophyll all summer. As chlorophyll stops being produced, the yellow pigment from carotenoids is revealed. But the ‘when’ and the coloration are less predictable. (more…)

    The Central City Council met for a work session on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, to discuss five separate issues. The work session was unusually well attended by City residents concerned with these issues. Topics discussed were traffic infractions and excessively large vehicles traveling along Spruce Street, speed bump polices, the paint of the Belvidere Theatre, the costs to add turning options to Exit 7 on the Parkway, and the Water General damage.     The Colorado University Buffaloes had played the Colorado State University Rams eighty-eight times since 1883 entering last Friday’s football game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Billed as the Rocky Mountain Showdown, the Buffaloes hold an all-time 3-to-1 advantage in those meetings and were hoping to win their third in a row against the Rams. (more…)

    Kyle Hollingsworth of popular String Cheese Incident opened this year’s version of NedFest on Friday with his inspired electric keyboard-driven numbers and improvisational jams. To close the evening, Grammy Award-winning bassist Oteil Burbridge celebrated his birthday alongside a formidable cast that included: guitarist John Kadlecik of Dark Star, Rat Dog’s Jay Lane on percussion, and Alfreda Gerald belting out vocals on a par with Aretha Franklin.
