Living history walked and talked in Golden Gate Canyon’s Grange Community Center, Friday evening, January 19, 2018. The 6:30 pm start time was happily delayed for the History of Golden Gate Canyon meeting. The delay was to accommodate the crowd with more chairs, and a sound system to go with the video screen already in place. The audience quickly grew to of over 100 people scattered between four generations of locals. (more…)
Commissioners to close Community pool

As Old County Courthouse renovations continue, Gilpin County’s Board of County Commissioners are meeting temporarily in Central City Hall. Present at the 2nd meeting of 2018, on Tuesday, January 23, were District #1 Commissioner and Chair Ron Engels, District #2 Commissioner Linda Isenhart, and District #3 Commissioner Gail Watson. Also participating in the meeting were County Manager Leslie Klusmire, County Attorney Jim Petrock, and Deputy Clerk Sharon Cate documenting minutes. (more…)
November 16, 1934 – January 16, 2018
Bennie Laubhan, Jr., a long-time resident of Russell Gulch, died January 16, 2018 in Colorado Springs, following a prolonged battle with cancer.
Bennie was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on November 16, 1934, and adopted by Eva and Bennie Laubhan, Sr. shortly after his birth. He graduated in 1953 from North High School in Denver, and enlisted immediately in the US Army. He served as Supply Clerk and Supply Sergeant for the 78th Field Maintenance Company in Korea in 1954 and 1955, finishing his military service at Fort Hood, Texas in 1956. (more…)
High School Grappling Action

After weeks of hard work and dedication, the Gilpin County High School wrestling team left Kiowa High School with one of the most successful meets known to Gilpin County. The wrestlers taking on competition at the tournament were Josh Trujillo, Mike Wenholz, Manny Gomez, Triston Dipasquale, and Will Innis. Each varied in weight allowing them to conquer at all levels of competition, Trujillo at 152 pounds, Wenholz at 126 pounds, Gomez at 170 pounds, and Dipasquale, as well as Innis, at 120 pounds. Boys’ Varsity Action
Gilpin’s varsity hoops athletes scored a second season home win on Tuesday, January 9, when they defeated the Lyons Lions 58-43 in a conference battle. The Eagles are now 2-6, 1-1 in conference play. Lyons has a similar record: 3-6 overall, 1-2 for league work. (more…)
October 8, 1918 – January 7, 2018
James (Jim) A. Chase passed away peacefully on January 7, 2018. Jim was born in Central City, Colorado on October 8, 1918 to Anna and James Chase. Anna died when Jim was a newborn in the 1918 influenza epidemic while his father James was in the Army, so Jim was raised by his Aunt Mary and Uncle Billy Hamilton in Central City. (more…)

January is School Board Member Recognition Month

The Gilpin County Board of Education met on Tuesday, January 16, at 7:00 p.m. A quorum of Craig Holmes, Sarah Swanson, and Kersten Armstrong began on time. Due to involvement in basketball games, Brook Ramsey arrived late and Steve Boulter was absent for the public segment of the meeting. Superintendent David MacKenzie and Elementary Principal Heather Huntoon were present. (more…)

Metro Junior Wrestling League

On Saturday, January 6, the Gilpin County Youth Wrestling team hosted a Metro Junior Wrestling League Tournament at the Gilpin School. The admission was only $5 for adults, and $3 for seniors and children, and was well worth the admission price for all the action that ensued. (more…)
Basketball teams back in action after winter break

Girls’ Clash v. Warriors
In a tightly-played match, the Gilpin H.S. girls’ varsity squad scored another victory to add to their overall season record of 4-2, when they met the Longmont Christian Warriors away on January 5. The Lady Eagles achieved a 40-35 victory over their rivals, who possess a 5-2 record. It was the first league game for the season for the two teams. (more…)

The old Courthouse, currently a construction site to remodel and maintain useful durability of the building, at 203 Eureka Street, Central City, Colorado, is the normal meeting place for Gilpin County’s Board of County Commissioners meeting. Debra Krause, 60, passed away on December 29, 2017 at her home in Lake Montezuma, Arizona. She was born Debra Jean Soucy to Marilyn and William Soucy on December 19, 1957. She is survived by three sons, Duncan, Justin and Josh, and one daughter, Emma. (more…)
