The event gets going on Friday evening, August 17, at 7:00 p.m. with the new Zombie Paint and Shoot Party and the first ever crowning of Fair royalty. 1924 – July 29, 2018
Donna Cozart passed away July 29th at the age of 94. She has been a Gilpin resident since 1980. Her memorial service will be held at Christ the King Church Saturday, August 25th at 10 am. WinGS ladies group from CTK will provide a potluck lunch for those paying respects to the memory of Donna Cozart.
February 2, 1936 – July 29, 2018
Bill Lorenz passed away Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2018 and will be missed by everyone who knew him. Family members are wife Kay, children Heidi (Ed) Pasic, Lisa Artz, Tony (Mary) Lorenz, Stephanie (Al) Elio, and Jeff (Suzi) Lorenz. Also are sixteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A memorial service is tentatively planned for August 16th, but is not yet confirmed. Colorado at the Columbian Exposition of 1893

World War I lasted over four years, involved 32 countries, and killed nearly 9 million soldiers, with 10 million civilian casualties. The horrific conflict came to an end one hundred years ago this year, on November 11, 1918. In remembrance, the Gilpin History Museum has been presenting an exhibit this summer on our county’s participation. (more…)
Jenny Creek Trail provides an easy off-road outing

Talking to some local friends recently, we decided to take advantage of the beautiful Colorado weather and cool mountain temps by doing a day trip on a local Jeep trail. We discussed several local options that were more scenic than difficult, and decided on one of our favorites – the Jenny Creek Trail that parallels the Rollins Pass Road about halfway up to the Needles Eye Tunnel after turning off from Tolland Road out west of Rollinsville. Lorenz for treasurer; McMillan for assessor

Gilpin County Republicans held an informal get-together at the home of Gary and Alynn Huffman on Sunday afternoon, July 22, to introduce their party’s candidates for Gilpin County Treasurer and Gilpin County Assessor. The Black Hawk/ Central City Sanitation District was formed by District Court Order fifty years ago on July 24, 1968.
The original Board of Directors consisted of: Norman R. Blake, T. J. Hennings, G. D. Harbin, Ernest A. Wright, and William C. Russell, Jr.The Board worked hard and cooperatively to establish the first sanitary sewer system for the two historic cities. (more…)

Honoring Gilpin and Boulder County Fire Fighters

The Timberline Fire Protection District “Parade One” fire truck made its first public appearance in the Nederland 4th of July Parade. The 1924 Chevrolet Obenchain-Boyer Chemical Engine was a gift to the district to “honor the men and woman of Gilpin and Boulder Counties and their supporting families who serve the community as volunteer fire fighters past, present, and future.” (more…)

Ralph Felker Barnhardt, 73, of Black Hawk, Colorado, formerly of Kannapolis, NC, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 10, 2018.
He was born October 29, 1944 in NC to late Ralph and Virginia Barnhardt. He graduated from A.L. Brown High School, class of 1963. Ralph was a veteran of the US Army. He enjoyed being a member of the Wild Bunch as they did reenactments of early Central City, Colorado life. (more…)

October 12, 1930 – July 4, 2018
Florence “Flo” A. (Mischke) Bostick, age 87, formerly of Westcliffe and Black Hawk, Colorado, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at the Warren Barr Nursing Care of Lincolnshire. She was born October 12, 1930 in Chicago, IL to her loving parents, John and Margaret Mischke.
Flo was a long-time educator in Black Hawk, Florida, and Illinois. She was a long-time teacher at Gilpin County School. She retired from there in 1998 and then moved to Westcliffe. She loved Colorado and was sorry to move to (more…)
1952 – May 4, 2018
On Friday, May 4, 2018, Christine (Chris, CJ, Noodles) Johnson, mother, daughter, sister, and friend passed away at the age of 66 years. Chris lived in Nederland and Gilpin County in the early 1970’s and spoke of her time here fondly. She brought light and happiness everywhere she went.
Chris will be remembered and celebrated by her Mother, Helen (Kvidt) Infeld, her daughters Jessica (Barry) Fahey, Jennifer (Matt Perkey) Crowe, and Kaitlyn (Tom Jakinovich) Crowe, her brothers Steve (Pam) Johnson, (more…)
