Lady Eagles get a playoff win over Union Colony

The Gilpin Eagles varsity boys blasted the Lyons Lions 64-53 on Tuesday evening, February 20, in a 2A District 7 league playoff game on Gilpin’s court. The match had been scheduled for Monday night but was canceled due to the snowstorm.
The varsity girls also brought home a victory as they triumphed 31-27 over Union Colony Prep of Greeley. (more…)
Gilpin’s top wrestler best in past 15 years at school

Senior Josh Trujillo represented Gilpin High School at the 2018 Colorado state wrestling tournament at the Pepsi Center last weekend. The event, which ran from Thursday, February 15 through Saturday, February 17, crowned champions in each of 14 weights from Class 2A through 5A. (more…)

Council meets for regular meeting

Work Session
The Central City Council met with Staff on February 20, 2018, for a work session prior to the regular council meeting. The topic of conversation was a Gaps Analysis of Emergency Services presented by Dan Qualman of ESCI (Emergency Services Consulting International). The City has long known their firefighting resources are being stretched thin with age and hired an independent third party to conduct an analysis based on 2016 figures. (more…)

According to legend, the Jade Emperor announced that he was creating a Chinese lunisolar astrological calendar in which twelve animals would be included on a first to arrive basis in the morning. The cat suggested to his good friend the rat that they both should leave early in hopes of being named to the calendar, but was concerned that he would oversleep. (more…)

The Peak to Peak Rotary Club received a $1,000 grant from Farmers Insurance Exchange Co. in their ongoing effort to assist in local communities. The grant was applied for by Rebecca Shirey, a local Farmers Insurance Agent, who has been a resident for nearly 30 years in Mid-Gilpin County (more…)
A Colorado Pioneer

Born January 27, 1822, to Seth and Retsey (Thayer) Gambell, in Richard County, Ohio, Alfred D. Gambell grew to manhood on his parent’s farm and attended the local school.
In 1844, when he was twenty-two years old, he made his way to the shores of Lake Erie and secured a job on a steamer, later temporarily locating in Buffalo, New York. He traveled extensively in the Midwest and New England before securing a position in 1847 on a whaler bound for the Arctic regions. One year later, he returned to the United States, soon after securing passage aboard a ship bound for California by way of the Horn. (more…)

Access to fresh, wholesome, and healthy food

Last Saturday morning, over 300 pounds of produce was delivered to the High Country Professional Building where volunteers brought the produce inside, and quickly started sorting, cleaning, and counting. By noon, members of the Holistic Homestead CSA started arriving, bags in hand ready to pick up their share of tomatoes, onions, carrots, oranges, apples, lettuce, broccoli, potatoes and more. (more…)

By Gilpin County Sheriff, Gilpin Ambulance, Timberline, Alpine Rescue, and Rocky Mountain Rescue teams
A 35-year-old man was rescued Sunday, February 4, after being injured while backcountry skiing.
The Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office, Gilpin Ambulance Authority, Timberline Fire Protection District, Alpine Rescue, and Rocky Mountain Rescue responded to a 911 call around 11 a.m. Sunday morning. The skier was injured in the area above Tolland Road in Rollinsville. (more…)
