Life is the bubbles under the sea. But if you happen to be a teen mermaid, and you try to check out life in the human realm, the waters can get choppy. Of course, that oceanic conflict made for a great story in “Little Mermaid Jr.,” presented last Friday, November 16, and Saturday, November 17, by Peak to Peak Players in the Gilpin County School auditorium. The more than 40 folks of all ages who came to HawkQuest Saturday, November 17 at Christ the King Community Church, came away with a deeper understanding of the birds of prey in Colorado. The HawkQuest presentation helped us realize the things we can do to preserve the amazingly well equipped birds’ habitat which included being respectful of the environment we share, along with simply picking up trash. We were reminded that in creation, God asked the people to take care of the animals. (more…)

Seniors a valued part of the Gilpin Community
Gilpin County School hosts traditional Thanksgiving mealby Patty Unruh
Gilpin County’s senior citizens were treated to extra-special service on Thursday, November 15, as they gathered at Gilpin County School for a hearty Thanksgiving meal. A smiling, grateful crowd of about 60 participants in the Gilpin Community Center’s senior program came for the well-loved tradition. Fifth graders from the traditional and Montessori classes held the doors open for their guests, escorted them down the hall to the old gym, served the meal, and cleaned up afterwards. Lively musical entertainment was provided by the school’s band and choir. (more…)

It’s imperative that we not forget the many sacrifices made by our service men and women, living and dead, active duty and veterans. Accordingly, students, staff, community members, and active duty military personnel honored Gilpin County’s veterans with a tribute on Thursday morning, November 8, in the school’s auxiliary gym. It was a day not only to thank the veterans for their sacrifice and service, but also to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. (more…)

Barbara Lawlor remembered
June 7, 1942 – November 3, 2018Barbara Lawlor of Nederland, Colorado, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2018. Barbara was a resident of Nederland and had worked at The Mountain-Ear newspaper for more than 36 years, and for the Weekly Register-Call at one time.
She was a beloved mother, sister, friend and colleague and will be dearly missed by all. (more…) -

Air Force mascot abduction

An ill-conceived college prank before the November 3rd football game between Air Force and Army in West Point, N.Y., went terribly wrong. The tradition of stealing the opposing team’s mascot in the past might have seemed funny to some and never resulted in injury until now. The practice dates back over a century with Navy kidnapping Army’s mule and Army “getting Navy’s goat.” (more…)
