Volleyball Win over Jim Elliot Christian
The Gilpin County High School’s varsity volleyball team squeaked by Jim Elliot Christian 3-2 in a hot contest October 7 at home. It was a real screamer as the two well-matched teams battled back and forth. The J.E. Warriors started off winning the first two sets 25/17 and 25/22, but Gilpin came back to score victory in 26/24, 29/27, and 15/11 sets. The Lady Eagles’ record is 9-6 this season, compared to J.E. Christian’s 12-3 record.
Team leaders this season in kills are Stephanie Siegrist with 90, Alyssa Chareunsouk with 50, and Bailey Hanssen with 36. Chareunsouk has 55 serving aces, Siegrist 24, and Sierra Deleon 20. Block leaders are Siegrist with 7, Deleon with 2, and Chareunsouk with 1. Chareunsouk is first in digs with 184, Deleon with 121, and Siegrist with 115. Deleon has 210 assists, Jada Gohdes 13, and Aspen Nadeau 10.
The Lady Eagles were decked out in bright pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Volleyball Match with Denver Jewish Day
Gilpin also netted a win against Denver Jewish Day 3-1 on October 1 in an away conference match. Set scores were 25/22, 25/8, 21/25, and 25/20.
Stephanie Siegrist led the Eagles in kills with 13, followed by Alyssa Chareunsouk with 3 and Alex Martin, Jada Gohdes, and Sierra Deleon with 1 each, for a total of 19.
Leader in serving aces was Chareunsouk with 10, and Martin, Siegrist, Gohdes, and Aspen Nadeau each contributed 1.
Gilpin had 92 digs; the top performers in this area were Chareunsouk with 28, Siegrist with 20, Martin with 18, and Alexis Kennedy with 11.
Nadeau was the leader in ball handling assists with 10, followed by Sierra Deleon with 5 and Martin and Gohdes with 2 each.
Chareunsouk was also first in serving received success with 19; Martin, Siegrist, and Cicely Lepro each had 11, and Kennedy and Gohdes each had 3.
Volleyball Match with Bellevue Christian
The Lady Eagles walked away with a win September 30 in an away conference game by a score of 3-0. Set scores were 25/6, 25/16, and 25/9.
Siegrist was the leader in kills for Gilpin with 4. Several players contributed 1 kill apiece: Martin, Chareunsouk, Gohdes, Deleon, Bailey Hanssen, and Jessie Morgan.
The team had 18 serving aces; Chareunsouk was the leader with 6, followed by Siegrist with 5, Gohdes with 3, and Martin and Deleon with 2 each.
Gilpin was low on digs with only 5 total. Players getting 1 dig each: Kennedy, Martin, Lepro, Chareunsouk, and Siegrist. Bellevue had 34 digs.
Deleon was first with 7 ball handling assists.
Chareunsouk had 9 successfully received serves, followed by Martin with 5, Lepro and Siegrist with 3 each, and Kennedy, Hanssen, and Gohdes with 1 each.
Middle School battles with East Grand
Gilpin’s Middle School football team lost its contest with West Grand (Kremmling) 44-26 on September 25 in an away game.
West Grand scored on the opening kickoff and proved to be a very tough opponent.
Head Coach Clinton Wenholz noted, “Despite the adversity, we still put up 257 yards on offense.”
Jamie Alexander had 128 yards of rushing. Will Lorenz had 137 yards of passing. Both Jake Duncan and Angel Gomez led the team on defense with 10 tackles apiece.
On October 4, Gilpin also lost 20-18 to East Grand at Clear Creek in a “B” game, which was a game for all the sixth and seventh graders only.
The offense was quarterbacked by Mateo Maldonado, who scored two touchdowns. Mateo had 151 yards of rushing. Angel Gomez led the team on defense with 18 total tackles.
Wenholz said, “This was a great game and a wonderful opportunity for the boys who don’t see a lot of playing time to play in a whole game. It also gives me a chance to see what our team will look like next year. I’m proud of every one of the young players and their exceptional effort, despite dropping 2 games and going to 4-2 overall.”
