Runners pay tribute to fallen soldiers

Mamita Daska of Ethiopia took first place in the Women’s Elite 10K with a time of 32:44.84. Ethiopia also placed second. Gabriel Geay from Tanzania won the Men’s Elite 10K coming in at 29:02.19, just .62 seconds ahead of Leonard Korir of the U.S.A. As predictable as East Africa sweeping the pro races was the zaniness that surrounds the Memorial Day event. (more…)

Eagles hold commencement exercises

Gilpin County High School’s Class of 2017 reached the end of twelve years of hard work and got a piece of paper to show for it. A very important piece of paper – the high school diploma. Friends and family joined the graduates on Saturday, May 20, in a packed school auditorium for a ceremony filled with happiness, pride, tears, and excitement. (more…)
Capping ceremony a new tradition

Gilpin County High School seniors received an estimated $398,850 in scholarships at an awards ceremony on Wednesday evening, May 17. The Booster Club had provided a banquet for the occasion and decorated the auditorium with banners and balloons in the school colors of black and gold. (more…)

Selma Diane Rittenhouse, 70 of Black Hawk, Colorado died peacefully at home on May 17, 2017.
Diane was born on June 8, 1946 to Norman and Mildred Blake. She graduated from Gilpin County High School in 1964 and CSU in 1968. She married John Rittenhouse on December 28, 1968. They moved with John’s Air Force career until they returned to Gilpin County in 1980. (more…)

Eagles v. Golddiggers Baseball
The Gilpin High School Eagles varsity baseball team surprised the Clear Creek Golddiggers of Evergreen with a come-from-behind 12-8 tournament win on Thursday, May 13. The tournament games were part of the 2017 CHSAA District/Regional baseball tournaments for Class 2A, District 7. The Eagles ranked sixth going into the tournament against number three-ranked Golddiggers. (more…)
Public Forum for Residents and Board Meeting

Timberline FPD hosted a public forum for residents on May 15. Chief Paul Ondr explained the need for this upcoming inclusion election. Currently, Timberline covers approximately 125 square miles in both Gilpin and Boulder County. The inclusion model would extend its boundaries to 173 square miles, though there’s nothing “square” about its shape, which covers south of Nederland to the north of Idaho Springs. (more…)

The Peak to Peak Chorale Performs Woody Guthrie

Local talent in rural Gilpin County can be beautiful as our sunsets or sometimes like a diamond in the rough. This last weekend, May 5 through May 7, the Peak to Peak Chorale proved to be a fantastic sunset. The Chorale’s annual spring musical this year is called “Woody Guthrie Hard Travelin’: Life in America” and used Guthrie’s music and quotes to paint a picture of life in 1930s and 40s western America.
