    Council Busy with End of Year Business

    The festive decorations at 211 Church Street in Black Hawk is a reminder that it is nearly the end of the year. The Black Hawk City Council approved the 2018 budget of $33 million at their regular 3 pm Wednesday meeting on December 13, 2017. The City’s mission is to progressively provide cost effective programs and services of the highest quality to the community. Black Hawk may have the smallest population of a city in Colorado, yet, they continue to provide excellent services for over 10,000 people during each week-end. (more…)

    The Central City Council met with Staff on December 19, 2017 for a work session prior to the regular council meeting. Representatives from Crowd LTD talked to the City about the idea of rebranding Central City with a focus on tourism. Alderwoman Bell expressed concern that if they rebrand now, there would be too many empty buildings and its like promising something we could not deliver. Tod Hardin, Director of Client Services for Crowd LTD, listened to ideas and suggestions from both Council and attendees. (more…)

    The Monthly Board Meeting and Quarterly Pension Board Meeting on December 12, 2017 had an abundance of positive news. President Chip Smith called the meeting to order promptly at 7 pm at Station #5 in Black Hawk. In attendance were VP Chris Samuelson and Treasurer Carol Tucker along with Chief Paul Ondr and Jennifer Hinderman.

    The meeting started with congratulating firefighter Kris Chupka, who was awarded his “Black Helmet” for completing State Fire Fighter 1, HAZMAT operations, Wildland, and EMT Basic certifications. The Chief’s update stated that Timberline responded to 47 calls in November which was the fewest calls for a month in years. (more…)

    Lady Eagles Upset Mustangs

    The Gilpin girls’ varsity basketball team was not expected to win against the West Grand Mustangs (Kremmling) in home non-league play last Thursday, December 7. But win they did, 42-36, fulfilling one of the team goals of getting at least one upset this season. Head Coach Jeff Schuessler said the victory was especially satisfying for the seniors, who had not won a game against these rivals in the last three years. This brings the Lady Eagles’ early season record to 1-2 overall. West Grand stands at 1-4. (more…)

    What happens when you cross Quentin Tarantino’s respect for odd history and William Steig’s “Shrek”? You get Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.” The analogy is not great, because “Shrek” is full-on comedy parody whereas Water is intended to be neither, but it makes you wonder. Del Toro’s new movie has all the artsy elements of an Oscar contender, but can it keep its shape through the film or does its missteps not hold water? (more…)

    Members of the Gilpin High School girls’ basketball team dished out a hearty variety of chili and soup to our area first responders on December 8 in the school cafeteria. The tasty meal was the team’s way to connect with local firefighters, law enforcement, and ambulance personnel and to say a big “THANK YOU!” for their service to Gilpin County. (more…)

    The Gilpin High School Wrestling Team is now two weeks in to the 2017-2018 season and the hard work is paying off. So far Gilpin Wrestlers have won over 75% of their matches and every wrestler entered has placed at both tournaments wrestling against mostly larger schools who compete at higher classifications. The truth is however that you can’t just show up when the season starts and expect to compete, our season began the day after the State Championship ended last February.  (more…)

    Saturday, Dec. 9 2017 found many neighbors and friends strolling through the Recreation Center chatting and carrying out bags of treasures at the 15h Annual Winter Arts Festival. If you need some creative art ideas here are 100+ creative art project ideas that you could use. Most of the craft and gift vendors were downstairs in the gym. However, the Gilpin County School art works presented a fine show of multimedia materials in the dance room. (more…)

    February 17, 1939 – December 8, 2017

    Linold Nels Begg was born to Linold James Begg and Elizabeth Louise Thompson in the Krell house on Dory Hill Road in Black Hawk, Colorado. The family moved to the present home on Lawrence Street in Central City in 1941 where he was a life-long resident of 76 years with exception of two years he served in the US Army in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1964.  (more…)

    The Gilpin High School boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams visited the North Park (Walden) Wildcats last Thursday, November 30, playing well but taking narrow losses in both games. Stop by the Gilpin gym this Thursday night, December 7, when the Eagles host West Grand. Junior varsity starts at 4:00 p.m., and varsity action begins with the girls at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:00 p.m. (more…)

    The Central City Council met with Staff on December 5, 2017 for the final budget work session prior to the regular council meeting. The Council was also presented with color and design options for the new “bubble” building that will be erected by the sand shed off the entrance ramp from Virginia Canyon Road to the Central City Parkway. This building will house the fire department vehicles being relocated from the Apex building. (more…)

    At 9:06 am on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 the meeting of Gilpin County Commissioners was called to order, but not in the old Courthouse in Central City. The renovation project for asbestos removal, installing wood flooring, some painting and carpet on the steps has a progression of office furnishings moved into the Commission’s council room of the old historic building.     The air was alive with holiday spirit as Gilpin Elementary students from preschool through third grade presented their winter music and arts program on Thursday, November 30. It was a packed house in the auditorium as parents sat with their children, who watched each other perform. Youngsters were dressed in their best brightly-colored frocks or button-down shirts.     Oh the festivities of the original Gilpin County seat bring giggly children to Santa, coloring contest, and cookie decorating by the amazing ginger bread house! Many children and adults heard the clip-clopping on the brick roads along Main Street in Central City, thrilled to get free rides. The cool sunny days this week end made for a pleasant ride when being pulled by the strong white horse harnessed to the elegant carriage provided and operated by Queen City Horse & Carriage. The ride was a great break between strolling through the shops and Bazaar tables loaded with local artists wares in three rooms of the Teller House. (more…)
