Black Hawk Educational Enhancement Tax program investment results in huge school gains
PRESS RELEASE – Remarks from Black Hawk Mayor David D. Spellman regarding the Educational Enhancement Tax program check presentation: May 8, 2019, marked the 10th anniversary of the first Educational Enhancement Tax presentation check from the City of Black Hawk to the Gilpin County RE-1 School District. Ceramics displays, band and choir music delight family and friends

Gilpin Elementary traditional and Montessori students from preschool through fifth grade proudly presented their artwork and music skills to family members, friends, and community members with two programs last week. Contentious issue brings much debate

Over 60 county residents arrived to voice their concerns on Tuesday, April 29, from 6-8 p.m. at the Gilpin County Community Center. The meeting was spurred by an abundance of phone calls and emails to the Sheriff’s office regarding the recently passed Red Flag Bill that was signed into law by Governor Polis on April 12. (more…)

Baseball Playoffs
The Eagles varsity baseball team of Gilpin High School flew past Lyons 3-2 in a District 7 playoff game on Monday, May 6, at Weber Field on Highway 46. The win advances Gilpin to the semifinals on Friday, May 10, when the Eagles will compete against the Dawson Mustangs at Butch Butler Field in Greeley. Gilpin goes into the semifinal matchup with a 3-8 overall record, 2-7 in league play. Good luck, Eagles! (more…)

January 14, 1956 – April 26, 2019
David Wienbarg was born in Denver, Co January 14, 1956, and passed away unexpectedly April 26, 2019, at home. Dave loved his life in Central City and was often seen taking his dog, Mel, on long walks around town.
He will lovingly be remembered by his son Jacob and grandson Jamison, as well as his aunt Mary Summers and many cousins and friends.

March 21, 1964 – April 24, 2019
James Frederick Erdman was born March 21, 1964 in Durango, Colorado to James Allen Erdman and Margaret (Mardi) Ann Erdman (Bredemeier). He died on April 24th in his apartment in Golden, Colorado with his beloved cat, Boo, beside him.
James died of natural causes—organ failure due to the effects of his life-long struggle with alcoholism. James would move a mountain for a complete stranger. He’d give his last penny to a beggar. He loved animals and (more…)

The proud, welcoming environment appears as though it has always been this way, but just ten years ago serious financial problems were threatening to send the local school district into the Colorado history books.
