Boys’ and girls’ H.S. basketball teams take close losses

The Gilpin High School boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams visited the North Park (Walden) Wildcats last Thursday, November 30, playing well but taking narrow losses in both games. Stop by the Gilpin gym this Thursday night, December 7, when the Eagles host West Grand. Junior varsity starts at 4:00 p.m., and varsity action begins with the girls at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:00 p.m. (more…)

Work Session
The Central City Council met with Staff on December 5, 2017 for the final budget work session prior to the regular council meeting. The Council was also presented with color and design options for the new “bubble” building that will be erected by the sand shed off the entrance ramp from Virginia Canyon Road to the Central City Parkway. This building will house the fire department vehicles being relocated from the Apex building. (more…)
And Job Openings at the Commissioners Meeting

At 9:06 am on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 the meeting of Gilpin County Commissioners was called to order, but not in the old Courthouse in Central City. The renovation project for asbestos removal, installing wood flooring, some painting and carpet on the steps has a progression of office furnishings moved into the Commission’s council room of the old historic building. The next few sessions will be held at Central City Hall. (more…)
Lower elementary grades entertain with art and song

The air was alive with holiday spirit as Gilpin Elementary students from preschool through third grade presented their winter music and arts program on Thursday, November 30. It was a packed house in the auditorium as parents sat with their children, who watched each other perform. Youngsters were dressed in their best brightly-colored frocks or button-down shirts. At Central City’s Teller House

Oh the festivities of the original Gilpin County seat bring giggly children to Santa, coloring contest, and cookie decorating by the amazing ginger bread house! Many children and adults heard the clip-clopping on the brick roads along Main Street in Central City, thrilled to get free rides. The cool sunny days this week end made for a pleasant ride when being pulled by the strong white horse harnessed to the elegant carriage provided and operated by Queen City Horse & Carriage. The ride was a great break between strolling through the shops and Bazaar tables loaded with local artists wares in three rooms of the Teller House. (more…)

Colorado History

In my research and endeavors to get a personal perspective of Lincoln Hills I’ve had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of Winston Walker. Several months ago, Winston, a tall, slender, soft spoken gentleman who loves the out-of-doors, accompanied me to Lincoln Hills where we spent several hours with photographer, Julian Gothard. As we traveled from Arvada up to Gilpin County Winston shared many stories and personal insights about the resort, it’s past and present. His thorough knowledge of the area and the people led me to wonder what his connection was to this beautiful oasis away from the hustle and bustle of metro-Denver. (more…)

The end of recycling and other issues at Council Meeting

The Central City Council met for a budget work session on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at 5:00 pm to go over the bulk of the proposed 2018 Budget. One notable item is the Citizen Trash Service account which is proposed as $66,000; a $24,000 reduction from the expected cost of trash and recycling. Manager Miera informed the Council that the number does not include the cost of covering recycling fees for residents. (more…)

Lean times for Broncos fans

It has been 27 years (1990) since the Denver Broncos have lost six straight games. Home Alone and Edward Scissorhands were popular at the box office and the show Twin Peaks premiered on television. Milli Vanilli was caught lip synching, and Lech Walesa was elected president of Poland. East and West Germany were unified, and Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, triggering Operation Desert Storm.
