Mary Louise Steele, 68, Arvada passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 in her home. Born on June 27, 1950 in Colorado she was the daughter of Rosemary A. (Miller) and Fred L. Dornbrock. Mary married Shawn Steele on September 21, 1996 and together they shared 23 years of marriage. Mary spent most of her life in Central City, before moving to Arvada 13 years ago. She worked in her mother’s antique shop in Central City before becoming a shift supervisor at a local casino. (more…)

The rain came bursting forth from dismal cumulonimbus clouds in Central City the afternoon of Saturday, June 15, but neither rain, nor sleet, nor cold can stop the tyranny of the Wild Bunch Gang. The 45th Annual Madam Lou Bunch kicked off its sultry celebration with a gun fight on the south side of Main Street. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so wet,” said Tom Matthews, one of the survivors of the gunfight and undertaker for the Wild Bunch Gang, but the show must go on. And go on it did as the sun pierced through the dark-slate-gray clouds shutting off the rain for the remainder of the afternoon. (more…)

Nevadaville, CO in the 1880’s

John W. Ratliff was an early settler of Gilpin County, who arrived in Nevadaville in 1860. He had a long and varied career, in which he helped Nevadaville through its developmental years and saw it through its heyday. Mr. Ratliff’s most notable accomplishments were postmaster and justice of the peace. As justice of the peace, Mr. Ratliff duties would include: settling disputes in miner’s court, officiating weddings, and swearing-in (more…)

Getting down with some New Orleans Funk!
Presented by Big Easy and Central Presents, Central Jazz is the revival of the Central City Jazz Festival, which ran continuously from 1976 through 1992. Expanding to two days in 2019, the festival had four stages and numerous bands over June 7th and 8th. Once again, we’re pleased to have jazz legends of New Orleans and Mardis Gras-style attractions presented in the historical streets of Central City. (more…)

St. James Methodist Church bids fond farewell

On Sunday, June 30, 2019, Reverend Dick Vickery will preach his final message at St. James Methodist Church in Central City. Vickery, who holds a Doctor of Theology, is hanging up his preaching tie to retire to a peaceful life at home near Evergreen. He has been ministering to his flock in Central City for the past nine years continually urging them to go out into the world and love people. (more…)

Movie Review

The penultimate X-Men movie, “Dark Phoenix,” just hit theaters marking the end of a dynasty with Fox Studios and Marvel Entertainment. Fox has one more Marvel movie in the works (which may or may not ever be released) now that the deal with Disney Studios is final and Disney holds the rights to the entire X-Men catalogue.The people at Fox knew the handwriting was on the wall when they started this project, and so they put all they had into (more…)

Run Your Ass Off

Clear Creek County Memorial Day week end held two races. The first was 5-6 miles that includes a 12% grade over rough areas, and the 2nd was 10.5 miles passing old mines, including the Arco.
