for defunding the police, in the City of Black
Hawk, we say fund the police and fund them
well. We have held this tenet since 1991 with
the advent of gaming in Black Hawk.”

Two additional candidates are running for the Gilpin Board of County Commissioners this fall.
They are Jeff Aiken (D), who will seek the BoCC District 1 seat, and Darin Jones (D), who is run-
ning in District 3.

“The most recent manifestation of this tenet
is on full display with the recent upgrades
and enhancements that have taken place
over the last year at the Black Hawk Police
Department. In 1994, after the renovation of
Black Hawk’s 1869 schoolhouse, the depart-
ment was relocated to this iconic building on
Church Street,” continued Spellman. “This is
where Chief Michelle Moriarty and her de-
partment members, City Engineer Matt Reed,
Tarik Muhammad and Ryan Blenker from
IT, along with PH Architects and MW Golden
Construction, did an outstanding job in the
design and execution of this project— captur-
ing a user-friendly quality and efficiency while
hosting a safer environment for police de-
